1898: First photos.
1899-1900: Together with F. Holland Day, organized the exhibition "American pictorial Photography". As an exponent of Pictorialism, he was convinced that photography could be as expressive a medium as painting.
1900: Travelled to Europe.
1902: Founding member of the Photo-secession. Specialized in portrait photography. Photographed numerous famous artists, authors and actors including Rodin, Henry James and Mark Twain.
1910: Published 20 photos in Stieglitz's Camera Work.
1912-1928: Worked as photographer in London.
1916: Together with Gertrude Kaesebier and Clarence H. White, sets up the group Pictorial Photographers of America.
1917: Inspired by Cubism, produced his first abstract photos.
