Painter
- Bartolommeo Montagna was the principal painter of Vicenza in
the late 15th century. He is first documented in 1459 and is recorded as living
in Venice in 1469. He was then presumably training as a painter, since he is
first mentioned as such in Vicenza in 1474. His works are markedly influenced
by Giovanni Bellini, the Vivarini, and Antonello, especially his sacra
conversazione of 1499 (Milan, Brera).
There are examples in Vicenza, and in
Amsterdam (Rijksmus.), Baltimore (Walters Gall.), Bergamo, Berlin, Budapest,
Columbus Ohio, Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, London (NG, Courtauld Inst.),
Milan (Brera, Poldi-Pezzoli, Castello), Naples, New York (Met. Mus.), Ottawa,
Oxford, Paris (Louvre), Philadelphia (Johnson), Rome (Borghese), San
Francisco, Springfield Mass., Venice, Verona, Washington (NG), Williamstown Mass. and Worcester Mass.
