'What a fool I was to come to Hollywood where they only understand platinum blondes and where legs are more important than talent'

Still, as had happened with All About Eve, a film came along which once more revitalized her career: Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). She obviously more than enjoyed playing 'Grand Guignol', and the film was overwhelmingly popular everywhere in the world. Perhaps the one unfortunate aspect of its success was that, in spite of minor forays back into 'women's films' such as Where Love Has Gone (1954), she was offered and accepted a series of ghoulish roles in progressively worse movies.

However in 1987, she and another veteran actress, Lillian Gish, took awards from the US Council of Film Organizations as Best Performance in Lindsay Anderson's The Whales of August, justification of her claim:

'I'll never make the mistake of saying I'm retired. You do that and you're finished. You just have to make sure you play older and older parts. Hell, I could do a million of those character roles. But I'm stubborn about playing the lead. I'd like to go out with my name above the title.'

She is still known as 'the finest actress of the American cinema'. There are those who have disputed that she acted at all, maintaining that all the characters she played were drowned by her own strong personality. It is a moot point, depending upon one's standards and definition of screen acting, although one could reply that she played the widest range of roles in the widest range of mood of any actress ever to have worked in American films. Whatever the final judgement of her abilities as an actress, however, it cannot be denied that, whatever she did on the screen, it is impossible totake one's fascinated eyes off her.

She died of metastasized breast cancer on the 6th October 1989 at the American Hospital in Neuilly, France. She is interred at Forest Lawn (Hollywood Hills), Los Angeles, California, USA, just outside and to the left of the main entrance to the Court of Remembrance...previous
