      Eno : contribution:
      Sparrowfall
      Composed by Brian Eno

      Reviews:
Instrumental are a British sextet of hip, classically trained string musicians who have recorded with electronica acts like the Orb and jammed onstage with junglist crews. On Acoustek they serve up "classical" remixes of well-known techno standards--a potentially cheesy project that is more than redeemed by the group's playful intelligence and gutsy feel for the music. Briskly performed and well-crafted arrangements of tunes like Orbital 's Forever, the Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds and Moby's Hymn do more than just highlight the interwoven patterns and haunting melodies that techno often slips behind its pounding beats; they also expose the debt this music owes to the phasing pulses of minimalists like Steve Reich , Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. Though Instrumental relies too much on plucked double bass to carry the beat, they often do an inspired job of translating dance rhythms into the more languid language of strings.

      Brian Eno
      UK cd album (1990)

      Number of Discs: 1
      Label: EG

      Reviews:
This complex sound sculpture was created by Brian Eno in 1978 and was even installed for a while at the Marine Terminal of New York at LaGuardia Airport. The ambient-minimalist soundscape has been alternately described as background Muzak, a profoundly artificial musical milieu, and a groundbreaking studio creation. Eno designed Music for Airports from a few simple notes and the serial organization of variable tape loops that didn't quite match up. It's a groundbreaking elaboration on the aural/spatial dimension that utilizes silence, piano, synthesizer, female voices, and, most importantly, the technology of the studio. A true metaclassic, the "music" is divided into four distinct movements. This record is the first of Eno's ambient series and is undoubtedly the best.

After his genre-defining Ambient 1: Music for Airports, Brian Eno collaborated with minimalist composer Harold Budd for Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror, which proved to be a natural pairing. By taking Budd's solo piano compositions and applying his unique sound treatments, Eno managed to enhance a startlingly spare work, yet keep its simplicity intact. On many tracks, Eno's additional sounds are so subtle that they easily mesh with any background noise that may surround the listener. A car driving by in the distance or an airplane flying overhead might fit seamlessly into one of the compositions. Budd's delicate piano work, though, is always at the fore, slowly creating a quiet, yet expansive, sonic landscape. Here both musicians are wholly in their element, making this an album of truly astounding beauty

      UK cd album (1990)

      Number of Discs: 1
      Label: EG

      Reviews:
Released in 1982, On Land is Eno's most mature, perfect ambient work. Combining low, rumbling synths with eerie banging and clanking and the occasional wild-animal chirp or grumble, this recording places the listener alone, in the midst of a massive piece of sonic landscaping. And Eno has left no detail to chance. In fact, the work is so complete that when Eno suggests a windswept plain, the listener gets a chill. When trumpeter Jon Hassell bays with a softly disturbing imitation of a wounded beast, the first instinct is to scan the horizon for its glinting eyes. So subtle, intuitive, and well paced is this recording that as it slips quietly from the speakers and into every corner of the listening room, it transforms the space into a gently pulsing sound environment that seems strangely out of time and away from everything. It's a place you'll be drawn to time and time again. An ageless masterwork.

Digitally remastered by Greg Calbi (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).

Unlike most of Brian Eno's conceptually unified ambient projects, Ambient 4: On Land is something of a patchwork. Recorded in six studios between 1978 and 1982, the eight pieces--ranging between three to nine minutes in length--are a curious mixture of solo works for treated instruments and full-fledged collaborations. Lizard Point is the most interesting, with the synthesizer, bass, and guitar of Material's Michael Beinhorn, Bill Laswell, and Axel Gros providing a denser and more varied musical backing than most of Eno's ambient works. Shadow, a duet with trumpeter Jon Hassell, introduces a world music element similar to their Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics duet album, and Dunwich Beach, Autumn 1960 introduces guitarist Michael Brook and multi-instrumentalist/co-producer Daniel Lanois, who became one of Eno's most valuable collaborators throughout the '80s. The solo pieces refine ideas first explored on earlier ambient works, though with greater subtlety and increased tonal color

      Brian Eno
      UK cd album (1987)

      Number of Discs: 1
      Label: EG
      Catalogue Number: EGCD21

      Reviews:
Eno first emerged as a member of Roxy Music, where the synthesizer player electronically "treated" the band's other instruments, the first indicator that the recording process was itself Eno's chosen instrument. His subsequent career has been one of the most provocative in pop, for not only did he devote himself to such obscure pursuits as "ambient music," but he produced vital albums by David Bowie, Talking Heads, and U2. Eno made a handful of relatively conventional pop albums in the 1970s, and Another Green World ranks with Before and After Science as his most enduring solo work. Another Green World finds Eno mixing distorted guitars (courtesy of Robert Fripp) with a variety of keyboards and exotic rhythms to create a meditative wash of sound that is nonetheless awash with colourful touches. Particularly appealing is the bubbling St Elmo's Fire, with a stunning guitar part by Fripp, and I'll Come Running, in which Eno shows that even a dedicated experimentalist can have a soft heart. From the strange-but-true file, Phil Collins contributes drums and percussion to three tracks.

      Brian Eno Notes:
Like everybody else, I sat and watched the first moon landing and the films from the subsequent missions. But for two reasons this television coverage left me left me unsatisfied. First, I felt that the small screen with its shallow colours was quite inadequate to the vastness of space. It made the whole enteprise look like an inferior edition of Star Trek.

Secondly, it seemed to me that the fear of boring the general public had led the editors and commentators to present the transmissions from space in an up tempo, 'newsy' manner that was unsympathetic : short shots, fast cuts and too many experts obscuring the grandeur and strangeness of the event with a patina of down to earth chatter.

For All Mankind - Criterion Collection DVDLate last year I received an invitation from Al Reinert to make music for his film of the Apollo missions. Reading his letter and notes for the film, I came to think that here might be the definitive document of these amazing expeditions.

Reinert had seen all of the film shot during those missions...some 6,000,000 feet of it, and had chosen his fottage from that huge collection (the Reinert dvd movie of it, For All Mankind - Criterion Collection is now available at amazon.com).

He had also interviewed the astronauts who travelled on the missions, discovering how they felt about the experience. All of the film he has used is from NASA archives, and the only voices heard are are those of the astronauts reflecting on their journey or talking with mission control.

I was excited by this project. It afforded an opportunity to explore the feelings of space travel, being weightless, seeing the night-time campfires of Saharian nomads from high above the earth, looking back to a little blue planet drifting alone in space, looking out into the endless darkness beyond, and finally, stepping on to another planet.

I don't see this as an adventure film, and I have not written adventure music. What this film can do is to present a set of moods, a unique mixture of feelings that quite possibly no human had ever experienced before, this expanding the vocabulary of human feeling just as those missions expanded the boundaries of our universe.

I hope this music will assist in that.
      -- Brian Eno, May 19th, 1983

      Review:
If you ever wondered what ambient music is all about, you could do worse than listen to the soundtrack by Brian Eno that accompanied the stunning visuals of NASA's Apollo missions to the moon. Created with an intoxicating mixture of acoustic and electronic, the music makes the now-classic space travel images more magical and memorable, introducing a dreamlike element to scenes of cold reality. An Ending (Ascent) is about as close to an actual tune as you'll get, but, as with every track, it is a shining example of what ambient music reveals about itself--slowly and carefully.

Eno's last glam-pop album before devoting himself entirely to ambient experimentation, Before and After Science showcases two sides of Eno's musical personality. The first half of the disc is characterized by floppy, pop-tinged romps reminiscent of his earlier albums (and heralding later Eno-piloted projects such as the Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues). Tunes like Backwater and King's Lead Hat (a song whose lyrics are reputedly about the Talking Heads, the title an anagram of the band's name) feature bouncy beats and keyboards, silly, riddle-like lyrics and Eno's Muppet-ish vocals.

The second half is considerably more subdued: the tender, airy feeling of tracks like Julie With and Spider and I indicate Eno's softer, abstract, synthesizer-dominated direction. Taken together, the fine tracks of this disc frame two sides of Eno: the pop songster and the ambient composer

Best known in recent years for producing U2's albums, Brian Eno began his career as a synthesiser player for Roxy Music. He has released many solo albums, both rock and ambient, written music for film and television soundtracks, and collaborated with David Bowie, David Byrne, Robert Fripp, and classical and experimental composers.
