The Battle of the River Plate (1956)

The Battle of the River Plate is a gripping drama set at sea. Ten days before the outbreak of World War II, a powerful German battleship sails around the South Atlantic destroying Allied merchant ships. Finally, the Allies learn of its location and a trap is set, pitching British intelligence against a powerful military opponent..

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

Roger Livesey, in a career-best performance (and a kind of Boris Johnson character for the first half of the 20th-century), brilliantly portrays a British officer, Clive Candy, through the trials and tribulations of three wars, three loves and a lifelong friendship across enemy lines. During the Boer War, Candy is sent to Berlin to trap a German spy. There he befriends a German Officer, Theo (Anton Walbrook) who marries the girl (Deborah Kerr) Candy is in love with. During the First World War, Candy marries a girl who resembles his lost love and helps Theo - now a POW - to get repatriated.

Very low-key propaganda piece which according to one reviewer was more reminiscent of an Ealing comedy than a serious wartime flag-waver . . .

The setting is in a newsreel production company and shows the various events leading up to the outbreak of hostilities including Chamberlain’s “Munich Triumph” (Peace In Our Time). Early wartime engagements by the British Navy, especially the chasing and elimination of the pocket battleship/cruiser Admiral Graf Spee including a dramatised account capturing and sinking of British merchant vessels.

Only in the final few minutes does a real military figure come on and start laying down a few heavy facts.

Korda’s magnificent epic is recognised as the finest screen adaptation of A. E. W. Mason’s novel about heroism and cowardice in the Sudan.

British officer Harry Faversham (John Clements) resigns his commission just before his fellow soldiers set off to war in the Sudan, following General Gordon’s death. Three of his friends send him white feathers for cowardice and the ultimate insult comes when the woman he loves hands him the fourth.

In despair he follows his regiment, surviving a trek across the desert to fight in the heart of the Mahdi’s kingdom – the impregnable fever-ridden prison in Omdurman.

With sumptuous colour photography, sweeping battle scenes filmed on location in Africa and a wonderful cast including Ralph Richardson and C. Aubrey Smith, The Four Feathers represents the pinnacle of Korda’s achievement in British cinema.

“A magnificent achievement.” – Daily Express

“Zoltan Korda’s memorable 1939 version of the classic adventure
        story, with a high-powered cast . . . and some wonderful spectacle.”

      In Which We Serve

      -
TV Times Film & Video Guide

Based upon the true story of H.M.S. Campbelltown and the renowned raid on the Dock Gates at St. Nazaire

Trevor Howard and Richard Attenborough star in this powerful story of a Royal Navy destroyer and her officers and crew during the early years of the Second World War.

HMS Ballantrea is an ex U.S. Navy destroyer – one of fifty lent by the Americans in 1940 to a desperate Royal Navy fighting to keep the Atlantic sea-lanes open. The ship was old and desperately in need of a major refit, but is almost immediately pressed into service on convoy escort duty. Her new captain, Lt. Commander Fraser (Trevor Howard) struggles to keep her operational, while dealing with problems arising from his own, chequered past. The crew are mostly new recruits, raw, inexperienced and unused to navy discipline. Somehow, Fraser must shape them into a formidable fighting unit as they run the lethal gauntlet of U-Boats and German bombers . . .

Just as HMS Ballantrea seems to have overcome her problems, she is selected to play a vital role in one of the most daring commando raids of the entire war – a mission from which the ship is intended never to return . . .

With a fine supporting cast including Bernard Lee, Dora Bryan, Sid James, Sonny Tufts, Joan Rice and James Donald, Gift Horse offers an authentic and moving portrayal of life on board a Royal Navy ship during World War Two. It was made with the full cooperation of both the Admiralty and the St. Nazaire Society, and is broadly based upon dramatic, real life events.

    • HMS Campbeltown was commissioned in the Royal Navy at Halifax and arrived at Devonport, Plymouth for refit on the 29th September 1940, for five weeks, the following day while on trials HMS Campbeltown was involved in a collision with HMS Risoy on the 2nd November. After repairs carried out in Liverpool HMS Campbeltown joined the 17th Flotilla, part of the Western Approaches Command. On the 3rd of December HMS Campbeltown was involved in a second collision, this time with HMS Comus, which put her in for repairs for 4 months until the 28th March 1941. When she emerged from repairs HMS Campbeltown was manned by a Dutch crew and under Dutch naval flag, serving with the 7th Escort Group.

The Dutch Government requested that the name be changed to Middleburg but because this would not be in keeping with the initial town name system the British Government refused. HMS Campbeltown reverted back to being manned by British Crew at the beginning of October and joined the 27th Escort Group and given the job of protecting convoys on the West African route. While on these duties, she again went into Devonport for repairs. After the repairs HMS Campbeltown was selected for the now famous St Nazaire raid. At Devonport she had two funnels removed so to look like the German Mowe class destroyer/torpedo boats. HMS Campbeltown (with a large number of Commandoes onboard) along with supporting MTBs, on the night of the 28th March 1942, succeeded in lodging herself at the gates of the Normandie Lock, (this being the only lock, which had been built for the French Ocean Liner Normandie that could take the mighty German battleship Tirpitz. HMS Campbeltown remained wedged until 11:35 hours, when she exploded. HMS Campbeltown became the most famous of all the "town Class" ships for this daring raid and subsequent dramatic end.

    • HMS Campbeltown was an old destroyer, one of the fifty superannuated American boats provided by President Roosevelt in exchange for the lease of British bases. Originally named the USS Buchanan, she was a flush-decked four-stacker built in the Bath Iron Works and launched 1919. She had spent most of her service life in reserve, and had been rescued from oblivion by Britain’s desperate need for convoy escorts. A relic of the previous war, Campbeltown, a weary old dog by 1942, to whom fate was about to give one last chance for glory.

On 10 March 1942, Campbeltown arrived at Devonport Dockyard, Portsmouth, where the extensive alterations could be carried out, hopefully, in the three weeks left. The ship was 95 metres long, by almost 10 metres across the beam, and a very slim craft, her flush-deck and four tall funnels giving her a very recognisable silhouette. The Campbeltown displaced almost 1200 tons, and with steam in all four boilers, could make a good 35 knots.

In converting the Campbeltown, it would be necessary always to think of how her draught would be affected by every pound of armour and explosives brought on board. To be sure of getting her safely across the mudbanks she would have to lightened to the extent that, even when the work was completed, her draught would be less than it was when work started.

On Nazi-occupied Crete, British officers Fermor (Dirk Bogarde) and Moss (David Oxley), aided by local patriots, are assigned the job of kidnapping the German commander-in-chief General Kreipe (Marius Goring). If official documentation didn't exist, we'd never believe a fantastic yarn and amazing recounting of real-life events like I Was Monty's Double.

At the height of World War II an actor, M.E. Clifton James, was swconded to impersonate General Montgomery. Trained by Major Harvey (John Mills) to imitate Montgomery to the last detail, Harvey then sends the actor on a tour of North Africa to divert the Germans' attentions away from the real "Monty".

An ingenious idea, treated here with a blend of wry humour and total conviction by director John Guillermin. M.E. Clifton James recreates his real-life role and holds his own against a formidable cast including Leslie Phillips, Bryan Forbes (who also scripted) and John Le Mesurier.

Released only two months after the outbreak of World War Two, this was one of the first propaganda films of the time.

Using a combination of documentary footage and well-known actors such as Ralph Richardson and Merle Oberon, it depicts a Germany under the grip of mass-hysteria led by Hitler. This is contrasted to the rural peace of England and the dignity of its inhabitants. Made in two weeks with a minute budget, this is an excellent example of war-time film-making.

Co-directed by Frank Lauder and Sidney Gilliat in 1943, Millions Like Us is widely regarded as one of the finest British films of the Second World War.

Patricia Roc, at the height of her fame, stars as Celia Crowson, an ordinary young woman determined to do her part for the war effort. Leaving her home, she takes a job in a factory and finds herself living in a hostel with other volunteers. Her fellow volunteers come from all walks of life and positions of society. They are all so different – and yet united in their desire to defend Britain and to see the menace of the Nazis defeated forever. The film follows the girls as they work together and discover the importance of friendship and true love.

Eric Portman and Gordon Jackson (playing the love interest and some eight years younger than the angelic Roc but looking older!) co-star in this fascinating film portrayal of life on the Home Front at the height of the Second World War.

Five different scientists, led by Professor Heatherville (Ralph Richardson), are brought together and work in total secrecy under incredible pressure in a race against time to develop this vital weapon. Their dedication disrupts their family lives as they are forced to sacrifice everything to make the great breakthrough.

The British submarine Sea Tiger docks after a long voyage and the crew are given a week's leave. Each heads-off towards his chosen destination. However, all their arrangements are then cancelled as they are recalled tot heir sub and instructed to find and destroy a Nazi battleship, the Brandenburg.

On their way, they pick up three German seamen who tell them where the ship lies in the treacherous Baltic Sea. When they eventually find it, they fire their torpedoes but must beat a hasty retreat.
