As Hitler’s Blitzkrieg sweeps across the Low Countries in early 1940, a squadron of Belgian pilots take temporary shelter with their aircraft on a flemish farm.

Here, farmer’s daughter Trescha tends the wounded pilot Matagne and the two fall in love. When the decision comes to evacuate to RAF bases in England, Matagne secretly buries the Regimental Flag rather than destroy it as ordered. As the time comes to leave, Matagne has to be forced to go and leave his beloved Trescha.

Now safe in England, he dreams of retrieving the Regimental Flag from underneath the noses of the invading Germans but dies before he can attempt it. Now it is up to his best friend Duclos to return to Occupied Belgium and rescue the flag.

Very low-key propaganda piece which according to one reviewer was more reminiscent of an Ealing comedy than a serious wartime flag-waver . . .

The setting is in a newsreel production company and shows the various events leading up to the outbreak of hostilities including Chamberlain’s “Munich Triumph” (Peace In Our Time). Early wartime engagements by the British Navy, especially the chasing and elimination of the pocket battleship/cruiser Admiral Graf Spee including a dramatised account capturing and sinking of British merchant vessels.

Only in the final few minutes does a real military figure come on and start laying down a few heavy facts.

Korda’s magnificent epic is recognised as the finest screen adaptation of A. E. W. Mason’s novel about heroism and cowardice in the Sudan.

British officer Harry Faversham (John Clements) resigns his commission just before his fellow soldiers set off to war in the Sudan, following General Gordon’s death. Three of his friends send him white feathers for cowardice and the ultimate insult comes when the woman he loves hands him the fourth.

In despair he follows his regiment, surviving a trek across the desert to fight in the heart of the Mahdi’s kingdom – the impregnable fever-ridden prison in Omdurman.

With sumptuous colour photography, sweeping battle scenes filmed on location in Africa and a wonderful cast including Ralph Richardson and C. Aubrey Smith, The Four Feathers represents the pinnacle of Korda’s achievement in British cinema.

“A magnificent achievement.” – Daily Express

“Zoltan Korda’s memorable 1939 version of the classic adventure
        story, with a high-powered cast . . . and some wonderful spectacle.”

      Peter Fisk

1964: Tim Page has been recruited as a rookie photographer to cover the war in Vietnam. Amidst the brutality, horror and cynicism of war torn Saigon he discovers friendships with his fellow reporters, especially combat photographer Sean Flynn, son of movie star Erroll Flynn. With the bravado of the young, they relish taking the risks that their older and more war-weary colleagues shun, counterpointing this adrenalin rush with the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll that are permanently on offer at Frankie's House...

lain Glen (Resident Evil), Kevin Dillon (Entourage) and Stephen Dillane (The Hours) star in this outstanding series, based on Tim Page's original book, which unflinchingly shows the full horror of war against the backdrop of the friendship between two photo-journalists. All four episodes feature the BAFTA-winning original score by Jeff Beck and Jed Leiber.

The Roder family find their loyalty split as the Nazis rise to power. Dr Roder, an eminent throat specialist, hates and detests the Nazis with a passion but his actress wife Irena is seduced by the glamour of Berlin and leaves him to further her career. With the help of Hans, a young man whose girlfriend has been brutalised by Nazi stormtroopers and sent to a concentration camp, Dr Roder secretly sets up Freedom Radio, beaming anti-Nazi messages into the heart of the Reich. Disillusioned by a Berlin in the grip of fascist tyranny, Irena returns to her husband and discovers what he is doing – unaware that her own brother, a fanatical Nazi, also knows her husband’s secret… Made in 1941, this stirring wartime adventure celebrated all the good people of Austria and Germany who risked their lives to oppose Hitler.

The film has the only seal of approval that it needs: it's directed by the great Anthony Asquith

The quintessential Englishman Raymond Huntley even pops up as a German Nazi!

"I ordered the men to land on the shore - but it was nothing short of murder. In a very short time, the first barge was full of dead and wounded. Blood was everywhere. I never knew the smell of blood was so strong ..." - Midshipman G. L. Drewry, VC

"I am not ordering you to attack. I am ordering you to die." - Lt. Col. Mustafa Kemal, Hill 261

In late 1914, the British and French navy was assigned the task of attacking the Turkish capital of Constantinople. There was only one obstruction - the defensive hill forts and sea mines of the Dardanelles...

For months, Allied battleships fought bloody duels with the big guns of the Turkish forts, while the enemy light artillery took a lethal toll of the smaller minesweepers. After the disastrous losses of 15 March 1915, which included the battleship Irresistible, it became clear that sea power alone could not crack the Turkish defences. A land assault would have to be launched.

The landings - and the months of bitter trench warfare which followed, would go down in military history as one of the most horrific campaigns ever fought... Featuring rare stills and film footage, GALLIPOLI - HISTORY IN THE DEPTHS recounts both the naval and land campaigns. Using first hand accounts by British, Anzac and Turkish soldiers and sailors, it brings the events of those terrible months in 1915 vividly to life, while modern day footage explores the surviving fortifications and the wrecks littering the sea bed. Divers explore the remains of HMS Irresistible, and the British battleships Triumph and Majestic, as well as landing barges, supply ships and the Turkish battleship Mesudiye - rusting memorials to one of the most bitterly fought campaigns of the Great War.

In April 1915 this was the location for the infamous allied attempt to take the Turkish held Gallipoli Peninsula and control the entrance to the Black Sea.

The failed naval attack and subsequent seaborne landings at ANZAC and Cape Helles ended in humiliating retreat and cost over one hundred thousand lives from all sides.

This is the remarkable story of Reinhard Gehlen, former Head of the German Secret Service, who helped to found the CIA, the American Central Intelligence Agency.

Gehlen was Hitler's Chief of Intelligence on the Russian Front during World War Two. However, long before May 1945 he had secreted himself and his files on the Soviets, away from Berlin to the so called Alpine Redoubt in Southern Germany. He waited his chance to bargain for his freedom with the advancing Americans. His bargain was accepted and he and his files formed the basis of the CIA when it was set up in 1947.

At the height of the Cold War three-quarters of the West's intelligence regarding the Soviets came, it was said, from Gehlen, who recruited. trained and infiltrated behind the Iron Curtain more than 5,000 secret agents. The story is traced from Gehlen's joining the Nazi party during the early 1930s to his retirement on a CIA pension in the late 60s.

This is the fascinating saga of the egocentric and fearless cavalry officer who, after graduating last in his class at West Point, became a general by the age of 23.

George Armstrong Custer, the son of a blacksmith, was born in New Rumley, Ohio in 1839. Known as America's Golden Cavalier, he led a rich and varied life. His Rambunctious youth as one of West Points' most notorious cadets, his glory days in the Civil War as the youngest general in the Union Army and his self-reinvention as the nation's most famous Indian fighter on the Western frontier. He is most famous, however, for his legendary last stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn where he and his 212 men were attacked by 4,000 Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. They battled heroically but ultimately all 212 and General Custer himself were killed.

      In Which We Serve

      -
TV Times Film & Video Guide

Based upon the true story of H.M.S. Campbelltown and the renowned raid on the Dock Gates at St. Nazaire

Trevor Howard and Richard Attenborough star in this powerful story of a Royal Navy destroyer and her officers and crew during the early years of the Second World War.

HMS Ballantrea is an ex U.S. Navy destroyer – one of fifty lent by the Americans in 1940 to a desperate Royal Navy fighting to keep the Atlantic sea-lanes open. The ship was old and desperately in need of a major refit, but is almost immediately pressed into service on convoy escort duty. Her new captain, Lt. Commander Fraser (Trevor Howard) struggles to keep her operational, while dealing with problems arising from his own, chequered past. The crew are mostly new recruits, raw, inexperienced and unused to navy discipline. Somehow, Fraser must shape them into a formidable fighting unit as they run the lethal gauntlet of U-Boats and German bombers . . .

Just as HMS Ballantrea seems to have overcome her problems, she is selected to play a vital role in one of the most daring commando raids of the entire war – a mission from which the ship is intended never to return . . .

With a fine supporting cast including Bernard Lee, Dora Bryan, Sid James, Sonny Tufts, Joan Rice and James Donald, Gift Horse offers an authentic and moving portrayal of life on board a Royal Navy ship during World War Two. It was made with the full cooperation of both the Admiralty and the St. Nazaire Society, and is broadly based upon dramatic, real life events.

    • HMS Campbeltown was commissioned in the Royal Navy at Halifax and arrived at Devonport, Plymouth for refit on the 29th September 1940, for five weeks, the following day while on trials HMS Campbeltown was involved in a collision with HMS Risoy on the 2nd November. After repairs carried out in Liverpool HMS Campbeltown joined the 17th Flotilla, part of the Western Approaches Command. On the 3rd of December HMS Campbeltown was involved in a second collision, this time with HMS Comus, which put her in for repairs for 4 months until the 28th March 1941. When she emerged from repairs HMS Campbeltown was manned by a Dutch crew and under Dutch naval flag, serving with the 7th Escort Group.

The Dutch Government requested that the name be changed to Middleburg but because this would not be in keeping with the initial town name system the British Government refused. HMS Campbeltown reverted back to being manned by British Crew at the beginning of October and joined the 27th Escort Group and given the job of protecting convoys on the West African route. While on these duties, she again went into Devonport for repairs. After the repairs HMS Campbeltown was selected for the now famous St Nazaire raid. At Devonport she had two funnels removed so to look like the German Mowe class destroyer/torpedo boats. HMS Campbeltown (with a large number of Commandoes onboard) along with supporting MTBs, on the night of the 28th March 1942, succeeded in lodging herself at the gates of the Normandie Lock, (this being the only lock, which had been built for the French Ocean Liner Normandie that could take the mighty German battleship Tirpitz. HMS Campbeltown remained wedged until 11:35 hours, when she exploded. HMS Campbeltown became the most famous of all the "town Class" ships for this daring raid and subsequent dramatic end.

    • HMS Campbeltown was an old destroyer, one of the fifty superannuated American boats provided by President Roosevelt in exchange for the lease of British bases. Originally named the USS Buchanan, she was a flush-decked four-stacker built in the Bath Iron Works and launched 1919. She had spent most of her service life in reserve, and had been rescued from oblivion by Britain’s desperate need for convoy escorts. A relic of the previous war, Campbeltown, a weary old dog by 1942, to whom fate was about to give one last chance for glory.

On 10 March 1942, Campbeltown arrived at Devonport Dockyard, Portsmouth, where the extensive alterations could be carried out, hopefully, in the three weeks left. The ship was 95 metres long, by almost 10 metres across the beam, and a very slim craft, her flush-deck and four tall funnels giving her a very recognisable silhouette. The Campbeltown displaced almost 1200 tons, and with steam in all four boilers, could make a good 35 knots.

In converting the Campbeltown, it would be necessary always to think of how her draught would be affected by every pound of armour and explosives brought on board. To be sure of getting her safely across the mudbanks she would have to lightened to the extent that, even when the work was completed, her draught would be less than it was when work started.

The heart-stopping story of the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War. Glory stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman. Broderick and Elwes are the idealistic young Bostonians who lead the regiment, Freeman is the inspirational sergeant who unites the troops, and Denzel Washington, in an Oscar winning performance, is the runaway slave who embodies the indomitable spirit of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts. Despised by the South, distrusted by the North, the 54th overcame seemingly insurmountable odds in their fight to join the war for freedom. Underpaid and ill-equipped, facing certain death at the hands of the Confederacy, the 54th rose to every challenge; their courage, skill and sacrifice paving the way for the Union's ultimate victory.

Based on the true story of American's forgotten hero's, Glory is one of the greatest war movies ever made.

Academy Award-winner Burt Lancaster delivers one of the finest performances of his career as a hard-boiled major in command of a grubby Vietnam outpost in this classic film of wartime confrontation.

The war was still a "conflict" and American soldiers were merely "advisors," yet the ambushes, the betrayals and the brutality were all very real. While the riveting action concentrates on a single, obscure incident, this excellent, understated and sharply intelligent film illuminates the vast landscape of an era.

The year 1540 was a crucial turning point in American history. The Great Indian Wars were incited by Francisco Vazquez de Coronado when his expedition to the Great Plains launched the inevitable 350 year struggle between the white man and the American Indians. From that point forward, the series of battles between the United States and the Native American Indians began where blood was shed and ultimately tens of thousands of lives were lost on both sides. The Battle of Tippecanoe, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, all three Seminole Wars and the Battle of Little Big Horn were some of the most important conflicts that led up to the last massacre, the Battle of Wounded Knee, where America's landscape would be forever changed.

1914: To Arms - The first phase of WWI, known as the "Battle of the Frontiers" included the efforts of the British Expeditionary Force at Mons, the regrouping of the British and French at Marne and the brilliant victory by the Germans at Tannenberg. The second phase "The Race for the Sea" saw both sides attempting to outflank their enemies but by Christmas a stalemate was reached and trench warfare characterised the conflict.

Disc 2. 1915: Death in Foreign Fields - 1915 was characterised by deadlock and a widening of the conflict. British cities were bombed by Zeppelin airships, German U-Boats attacking neutral shipping and gas was used at the Battles of Bolimov, Ypres and Loos. The Italians faced awful hardships in the first of twelve battles along the Isonzo River and the year ended with the Allies'' withdrawal from Gallipoli which typified their fortunes throughout 1915, small gains at an enormous cost.

Disc 3. 1916: Stalemate - 1916 saw the carnage increase to new levels. In February, the Germans began their assault on the forts at Verdun. In the East, the Russians launched the Brusilov Offensive whilst the British initiated the Battle of the Somme with terrible loss of life for little gain. At sea, the dreadnoughts of the Royal Navy and German High Seas Fleet clashed at Jutland in the war’s one substantial sea battle.

Disc 4. 1917: The Breaking of Armies - Mutiny in Russia’s ranks forced her withdrawal from the conflict. However, morale was restored by a string of Allied successes. Spectacular gains were achieved by Canadian forces at Vimy Ridge and the Battle of Messines allowed for the much larger Third Battle of Ypres. In November, the Battle of Cambrai heralded the first time tanks were used with marked success. By Christmas, both sides realised that 1918 would be a decisive year.

Disc 5. 1918: Germany’s Last Gamble - 1918 began disastrously for the Allies'' war effort. Using new ‘Storm Trooper'' tactics, the Germans launched attacks with devastating results. However, the lack of supplies and the outbreak of "Spanish Influenza" meant that the German forces were unable to push on. Their collapse was rapid and panic in the German High Command led to an Armistice which began on November 11th, 1918. The Great War was finally over.

Disc 6. Land Warfare Technology - This programme closely examines the development of land warfare and the effect it had on the conflict. The killing power of the machine gun resulted in wholesale slaughter. A new terror weapon emerged in the form of gas used by the Germans with terrible effect at Ypres in 1915. Arguably the most dramatic development was the tank, first used at the Somme in 1916, it would prove a decisive weapon.

Disc 7. Air Power Technology - The Great War introduced many new technologies but perhaps the most far reaching was the aeroplane. In 1909, Louis Bleriot managed to fly across the English Channel, an event which wakened military commanders to aviation’s potential. At the outbreak of the war, aircraft were to play an increasingly important role in reconnaissance and range-finding for the artillery. In the latter stages of the conflict, their roles included ground attack and long-range bombing.

Disc 8. Sea Power Technology - The Battle of Jutland in 1916 was the one great showdown of the war. Although it ended indecisively, the German Fleet returned to its harbours never to pose a serious threat again. Much attention was given to submarine technology and the German blockade of Britain nearly succeeded in forcing victory. The aircraft carrier’s first deck landing in 1917 was a major breakthrough but it was to play no significant role in the conflict.

They are the most recognised and photographed soldiers in the world. The public face of royal ceremony, resplendent in bearskins and scarlet tunics, they stand guard outside Britain's royal residences, famously Buckingham Palace.

The Grenadier Guards are the most senior infantry regiment in the British Army. They are also one of the oldest and in 2006 celebrated their 350th anniversary.

This DVD reveals the enormous amount of painstaking training and work that goes into a royal ceremony and the cruel reality of war as the Grenadiers go off to Afghanistan to fight for their country.

      DAVE ROGERS

During the Second World War, the ancient city of Bristol faced a bitter struggle for survival against German air raids. The bombing lasted from the night of June 19th 1940, when Luftwaffe aircraft first took off to attack the area, until the final 'all clear' sounded in the early hours of May 16th 1944.

Since the end of the conflict, surviving German documents have revealed that between September 1940 and May 1941 Bristol was the fifth most heavily bombed city in England, with only London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Plymouth receiving more attention. Coventry, synonymous with widespread destruction, was in sixth place.

Bristol was never purposely subjected to indiscriminate terror bombing as a means of smashing civilian morale. However, the inaccuracy of the heavy attacks mounted against Bristol's vital harbour facilities and aircraft factories, caused widespread damage, death and destruction in a number of the city's most populous districts. By June 1944, some 89,000 properties in the city had been either damaged or destroyed. More seriously, the lives of 1,396 people in the Greater Bristol area had been prematurely cut short during the four years of aerial bombardment.

By using archive film and illustrations, together with visits to historic locations and interviews with those who lived through the Bristol Blitz, this DVD shows how the city defended itself against Hitler's onslaught. It also reveals the full impact of the conflict upon ordinary Bristolians, thrust overnight into the front line of the war against Germany's mighty Luftwaffe.
