As resistance to the Roman invasion of Northern Europe collapsed, the Gallic warrior Vercingetorix marshalled 100,000 troops against the formidable and ruthless Roman legions, for what was to be a dramatic yet futile last stand at the famous hilltop fort of Alesia. The last of the fighting Gauls were up against one of military history's most inspired commanders - Julius Caesar and Roman legions of almost mythical invincibility. The extraordinary siege works constructed by the Romans not only kept Vercingetorix's army penned-in, but also managed to keep an enormous Gallic relief army out.

The bloody Peninsular War, lasting from 1807 to 1814, saw the commanders of Britain consistently defeating the best French generals Napoleon's army had to offer in a series of famous pitched battles. Ciudad Rodrigo however was a different type of fight - siege warfare, where civilians and soldiers shared the same conditions, privations and fate. This is the story of how great and lesser breaches in the walls of the city were made and how it was eventually captured. It features some of the most famous episodes and characters of the war including the fearsome "Black Bob" Craufurd.

The story of the battles for the strategically vital town in Nottinghamshire is a classic example of how a siege was conducted during the long and bitter fighting of the English Civil War. The town was the gateway to the north of England and was the site of three separate sieges, as the armies of the King and of Parliament fought for control. In February 1643, the Royalists beat back the determined Parliamentarian attacks, but the town then had to be relieved by the dashing Prince Rupert a year later. Finally, in May 1646, Newark surrendered to Parliamentary forces on the explicit orders of King Charles I, who in doing so sealed his own fate and condemned himself to the block.

Fought during the American Civil War, Petersburg should never have been "under siege" at all. Union forces should have seized control of the town in June 1864 but, through a mixture of confusion and incompetence, they failed in their objective and a year-long siege followed. Petersburg is best remembered for the tragedy of the great crater, the result of a huge underground explosion in July 1864, into which the Union Army inexplicably charged, creating a ready made killing zone. This unusual tactic was an extreme answer to solving the problem of siege warfare.

This was the hellish, protracted siege known to many as 'The Mincer". The fanatical French defence of the three forts - which had enormous psychological value to the whole nation - cost hundreds of thousands of lives and was, in part, the reason the Battle of the Somme was fought during the same year. The battle ebbed and flowed throughout the year and the forts were captured and recaptured many times before finally the fighting eased in December 1916. Unfortunately by this time almost 700,000 French and German troops had been killed or wounded trying to take or defend the city.

The Vietnam War arose out of a civil war between two competing philosophies. The South Vietnamese did not want to be part of the pro-Communist system being set up by the North so the country was divided along the 17th parallel of latitude.

Direct American involvement in support of the South began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, the longest and most unpopular war, to date, Americans have ever fought.

Over fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives whilst the losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling.

Vietnam, Battle Hell is a remarkable record of the American Administration's presentation of events, at the time, to support their cause which most would believe had little in common with a war that films such as 'The Deerhunter' subsequently portrayed with graphic reality.

The Sky Soldiers, the fighting 173rd Airborne Brigade featuring Huey Gunships and their "Cowboys" against the VC in the Iron Triangle, Operation Marauder, Dexter, Yorktown & Aurora.

The Black Horse Regiment, the famed 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Operations Thunderhorse and Elephant's Ear that took these hell-for-leather fighting men from sweating jungles to the Tet Offensive and bitter street fighting in Bien Hua and Saigon. The Air Mobile Division of the battling 1st Cavalry proved the effectiveness of the helicopter in bloody battle. 9th Vietcong Main Force Division - the 173rd discovered this captured enemy newsreel depicting ambush assault tactics of the Vietcong revealing a chilling picture of the enemy in battle.

      Harry Rasky

In a Voyage of Discovery that has taken almost three years and 25,000 miles of travel, The War Against The Indians pieces together in conversations, magnificent scenery, drama and music the story of the entire "Great Island" that is North America.

The story begins 40,000 years ago and continues to the present. It covers: the Columbus "invasion", the Spanish massacres, the destruction of the Huron Nation, the near extinction of the buffalo, the victory over Custer, the massacre at Wounded Knee, the life of young students at residential schools and the stand-off at Oka, Quebec. It also includes the great art and music of the First Nation's people.

In the course of making this sweeping documentary, producer/director Harry Rasky has exposed 100,000 feet of film and conducted interviews with hundreds of members of the native tribes, the Metis and Inuit peoples. Described by the Smithonsian Institution as an "epic masterpiece by the world's most acclaimed non-fiction filmmaker", The War Against The Indians is the most ambitious chronicle of the drama and history of the North American Indians.

      BRIAN BLESSED

The futility and the madness of the First World War was the spur for some of the greatest, most moving poetry ever written. The young men who brought the voice of reason to the slaughter of the Great War were themselves part of a long tradition of war poetry stretching back to the very dawn of time.

Introduced and narrated by Brian Blessed, "The War Poets" traces the development of the art of war poetry from Anglo Saxon times to the nightmare of the trenches. Using extensive film footage and dozens of contemporary images, this DVD brings new vitality to the chequered tales of heroism, cowardice, luck, valour and misery which together form the experiences of war over the centuries. The programme also features critique and analysis from Jon Stallworthy, reader of English Literature at Oxford University, and the foremost authority on war poetry in Britain today.

As World War Two rages, Jim Colter (John Mills) finds himself called up to serve in the army – but he’s soon to find himself at war on two fronts.

While he’s away, his lovely wife Tillie (Joy Shelton) attracts the amorous attention of Ted Purvis (Stewart Granger), a vicious local spiv and self-acclaimed ladies man.

When Jim’s sister writes informing him of what is happening, Jim decodes that the Nazis can wait and that an even more insidious enemy needs to be dealt with first.

He breaks out of camp, goes AWOL and sets off to find his wife. With the military hot on his tail, Jim must make his way through war-torn London to settle things once and for all.

Waterloo Road was written and directed by the great English filmmaker, Sidney Gilliat.
