A COMEDIE
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television.
The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical
and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.
“O villain, thou hast stol’n both mine office and my name!
The one ne’er got me credit, the other mickle blame.”
The arrival and arrest of
Egeon in Ephesus brings a family crisis into focus.
For elsewhere in the city, his son Antiphobus and his slave Dromio
are seeking their respective twins – lost to them 25 years earlier, in a shipwreck.
While mistaken identities mark their progress around the city, Egeon
has just 24-hours to find the thousand-mark ransom needed to save his life . . .
Roger Daltrey and Michael Kitchen
star in an exhilarating production of one of Shakespeare’s most vibrant and sparkling comedies.
As the play unfolds, he sends his characters through a tale of mistaken identity, assumed personas,
hilarious machinations and whimsical family relationships – with the audience always one step ahead.
"Proceed, Solinus, to procure my fall,
And by the doom of death end woes and all."
Roger Daltrey
with
Michael Kitchen • Cyril Cusack
and
Charles Grays

The
Comedy
of Errors
ABOUT THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
A marvellously staged adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s
most classically constructed works which along with The Tempest was constructed along similar lines to the
classical dramatists . . . . . On the night of 28th December 1594, the Christmas
revels at Gray’s Inn – one of London’s law schools – became so
uproarious that one performance planned for the occasion had to be abandoned. Eventually
‘it was thought good not to offer anything of account saving dancing and revelling with
gentlewoman; and after such sports a comedy of errors (like to Plautus his Menaechmus) was played by the players;
whereupon it was ever afterwards called “The Night of Errors”.
This sounds like a reference to
Shakespeare’s play, first printed in the 1623 Folio,
which is certainly based in large part on the Roman dramatist Plautus’ comedy Menaechmi.
