Still gorgeous after all these years
The iconic Debbie Harry is one of those artists who has never gotten the credit her body of work fully deserves. As the focal point of Blondie in the late 1970s/early 80s there was nobody like her. Oozing sex appeal like she invented it (and hey to us teenagers at the time she probaly did) her presence within the band reduced her fellow band members to faceless suits. Unkind I know, but to a generation of males she was all they ever imagined a woman could be.
And that was before you took into consideration that she co-wrote many of those songs and delivered them in such an ethereally punky way. There was just nobody remotely like her, as good as her, and it has remained the same since the golden years of the band. But those that have come after have 'borrowed' from her and reaped the financial rewards that for one reason or another were denied Harry. She brought her punky way into mainstream with an authenticity that Madonna et al can only dream about.
Those 'golden' years are now 30 years ago but still she makes music and still she holds her fans like a moth to the flame. Her looks are still haunting (does it matter that she has admitted to a facelift? Of course not) - these days she looks like a cross between Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.
Deborah Anne Harry was born in Miami, Florida in 1945. At 3 months she was adopted and raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey.
Jobs in the 1960s included being a Playboy Bunny. In 1968 she appeared with the folk band Wind In The Willows. Their only album was eventually re-released on the back of Blondie's success with on the front stating: 'featuring Debbie Harry'.
She met Chris Stein in 1973 and the following year formed Blondie. It took them 4 -5 years to achieve the success we now remember them for. They disbanded in 1983 and Harry went on to release solo albums and appear in movies. In the late 1990s they reformed to some commercial success, paarticuarly in the UK.
Debbie currently lives in the Chelsea section of Manhatten New York City at The London Terrace Gardens Apartments.
She has also appeared with the Jazz Passengers.
