    THE EALING STUDIOS RARITIES COLLECTION

The Ealing Rarities Collection features new transfers from the best available elements, in their correct aspect ratio. This collection showcases a range of scarce films from both Basil Dean's and Michael Balcon's tenure as studio head, making them available once more to the general public.

    CAGE OF GOLD (1950)

Slightly uneasy melodrama, with Jean Simmons menaced by a former lover who turns up just as she is about to marry a decent doctor. The action flits between Paris and London and David Farrar enjoys himself in a caddish role, while Basil Deardon disguises many of the sags in the story with brisk direction.
    Black and White / 1.33:1 / Mono / English.

    DEATH DRIVES THROUGH (1935)

A dirt-track driver turns professional, but after stirring resentment both on and off the track he finds himself being blamed for the death of another driver.
    Black and White / 1.33:1 / Mono / English.

    THE IMPASSIVE FOOTMAN (1932)

A woman finds brief respite from the selfishness of her husband with a young doctor, but can their friendship remain platonic?
    Black and White / 1.19:1 / Mono / English.

    FRIEDA (1947)

Anti-German prejudice nearly scuppers the new marriage of a returned POW who brings home the girl who helped him to escape. A fervent Nazi brother-in-law does not help, and the husband is too ready to believe the worst in his wife. For all that, it faces squarely the problems of post-war relations.
    Black and White / 1.33:1 / Mono / English.

I would love to make this page different to the countless Dvd pages on Ealing Studios Rarities Collection - Volume 3 that are out there in the cut and paste world that is the web. You know, brief outline, thumbnail of cover and, if you're lucky, the back cover. Very little content is original and you'll find that on alot of releases. Any reviews leave out the fact that each movie has a heart and soul and touches people in different ways down the years. So if you would like to add anything on the film, whether good or bad, or trivia on the film - indeed anything like how it made you feel when you first saw it - then e-mail me here (ihuppert5@aol.com) and I'll add it within 24 hours, crediting you with just your first name.

I'll start it off. Probaly the 2 out of the 4 films in this set that are worthy of comment are the David Farrar vehicles, Cage of Gold and Frieda. Both work if you can deal with the fact that Farrar always gives you less than you want. He was a restrained actor but a watchable one nonetheless. Out of the two Frieda is the better movie. Maybe the script lets it down, the isolation of the Zetterling character contrived at times and too pronounced but the ensemble cast, particularly Flora Robson and the always watchable (though an acquired taste for some) Glynis Johns, more than make up for it.

The other 2 films are well early Ealing, pre Balcon if memory serves me correctly, and are of historical value if nothing else.
