About Parastone

First things first: there are no better Art Egyptien sculptures/figures than these Parastone figures anywhere. The attention to detail & the 3d effect breathes new life in the work of the masters.

Parastone was originally part of the famous Borzo art dealership which was founded in 1880 and it primarily specialised in restoring religious art. When, alongside the latter activity, an increasing number of sculptures were produced after own designs, it was decided – in 1963 – to found Parastone as an independent company.

For over 50 years now, Parastone has successfully designed decorative sculptures, partly of timeless classic beauty, partly aligned with current trends. The museum images entitled Mouseion constitute an important part of the collection. Alongside exact copies of important works of art, Mouseion also consists of three-dimensional interpretations of paintings and sketches by many artists ranging from Jheronimus Bosch to Salvador Dali.

Parastone is located in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a historic city in the Netherlands and the birthplace of famous Medieval painter Jheronimus Bosch.

Art Egyptien and Parastone: what a magical combination.

Nubie (700 - 300 BC). The fabulous amulet is a combination of: 1. the Ankh cross with open eye symbolising eternal life. The square medallion in the opening depicts the god Heh. 2. The Djed column with four horizontal bars, often associated with Osiris, the king of eternity and also seen as a symbol of stability. 3. The holy Was sceptre, depicted in relief on the column, with the head of the Set animal. The sceptre is the symbol of the god Set’s power over the chaos he can create as the god of thunder and storms. The amuliet was found near the holy table mountain Djebel Barkal in Nubia (northern Sudan). The area was added to the Egyptian empire around 1450 B.C. by Thutmosis III.

As of 2014, I found that amazon now stock many of the Art Egyptien Parastone sculptures. As it is impossible to compete with their buying power you may well find the sculpture cheaper there. I have put links to their US site below which will take you to their Art Egyptien sculpture pages.

If I can ever compete with their prices then I will stock them again as I do love these sculptures and they deserve to be owned by as many people as possible. I also miss those conversations with fellow Parastone admirers who are adding a sculpture or starting a collection. For now it's enough to present them as beautifully as I possibly can or am able to do.

Although other goddesses also sometimes manifested themselves as cats, Bastet is seen as the principal cat goddess. In the complex Egyptian pantheon, Osiris and Isis’ daughter formed a trinity with Hathor and the vengeful Sekhmet, both negatives to Bastet’s positive. Bastet was attributed to have the power to invoke solar and lunar eclipses. She was associated with fertility through the cycles of the moon. Celebrations in her honour were so ecstatic that she was also worshipped as the goddess of song, dance and music.

(3750 - 3000 B.C.). During the pre-dynastic period, Egyptian potters clearly relished creating all manner of intriguingly shaped platters, bowls and pitchers most of which were based on animal figures. This unique bowl which dates back to the transition from the first to the second Naqada period seems to have been inspired by the hieroglyph for ‘bringing’. It leans forward as if offering its contents. It was probably used as an offering bowl at a sanctuary or in a tomb.

Ptolemaen era (3rd century B.C.). Since the Old Kingdom (approx. 2640) swallows have been associated with the stars and therefore with the souls of the dead. The Egyptian Book of the Dead (a collection of texts included in tombs) provides advice on how to incarnate into a swallow. The deceased should say: “I am a swallow. I am a swallow. I am a scorpion, the daughter of Re”. Then he will: “appear during the day and not be sent back to any of the underworld’s gates and will regularly and continuously appear as a swallow”. The continuous appearance is explained in the Pyramid texts (the oldest religious texts in existence): the swallows are the stars around the everlasting Pole star.

The Gayer-Anderson cat was named after the British officer and collector who donated this bronze sculpture to the British Museum in 1947. The cat was probably found in Saqqara or Giza at one of the animal cemeteries and dates back to the 26th Dynasty (664-525 BC).

The scarab was by far the most popular amulet in ancient Egypt. It is shaped like the holy dung beetle which rolls a ball of dung in front of it, just as the sun god Ra rolls along the firmament every day. Moreover, the larvae transform into beetles in the same way that the soul and body change appearance. The tomb scarab’s wings depict the sun god and the mythical first Pharaoh Osiris. Above them, the moon flanked by two Wedjat eyes. On the bottom, Isiris stands between his sister Nepththys and his brother Isis.

Neferoura, Thèbes (ca. 1475 BC), This beautiful statue dates back to the early 18th Dynasty, when Hatshepsut and her stepson Thutmosis III ruled the Egyptian empire. The legendary Senenmut was Hatshepsut’s highest public offical, confidant and perhaps also lover. He had served at court from the time her husband and half-brother Thutmosis II was still alive. Hatshepsut did not bear a son for her husband and so the throne went to one of the Pharaoh’s extramarital sons. After her husband’s death, Hatshepsut was appointed as regent for the Young Thutmosis III. Later on, she was also awarded the divine title of Pharaoh. This statue is viewed as one of the most beautiful. On the front of the statue, Senenemut had himself described as the princess’ principal mentor and protector. The right-hand side of the base states that the sculptyre is dedicated to the divine Hatshepsut. The left-hand side describes the god Amun by means of his seven most important characteristics. It is probable that the satue was located in the Amun district of the temple complex at Karnak.

(4000-3500 B.C.). This beautiful, stylised figure of a woman was carved from ivory during the first Naqada period. The large eyes were inlaid with precious lapis lazuli. In pre-dynastic Egypt such sculptures were often buried with the dead to ensure successful reincarnation.

Ptolémees (305 - 30 B.C.). The Ba is one of the five constituent parts of the human soul. It stands for everything that makes an individual unique. The term is close to what we now refer to as someone’s personality or character. Someone’s Ba lives on after their death and is therefore often depicted as a bird with a human head flying out of the grave. This statuette dates back to the Ptolemaic period named after the Greek rulers Alexander the Great instated after capturing Egypt.

(715 - 332 BC.). The falcon god Horus is one of the oldest, most well-known Egyptian gods. As early as in pre-dynastic times (the fourth millennium B.C.) cosmic powers were ascribed to the falcon. In the very complex world of the Eyptian gods, the falcon subsequently continued to occupy a prominent role, although its position and meaning varied according to place and time. The statue dates back to the Late Period, a turbulent time in which the already divided Egypt was captured by the Persians. These were subsequently driven out by Alexander the Great, who made Egypt part of the Hellenic empire. The falcon was found in Coptos, an important town in Upper Egypt, whence trading routes departed towards the Red Sea. One of the inlaid ivory eyes has been lost.

XVIIe dynastie (ca. 1350 BC). Pharaoh Amenothep IV (Tutankhamun’s father) was much less interested in military affairs than his predecessors. He focused his attention on religion and the arts. He had himself called Akhnaton, which literally means: ‘Aton wishes it’, referring to in his mind, the only god, the sun god Aton. The introduction of monotheism soon encountered widespread resistance from both the priests and the people. The progressive Pharaoh did however manage to free the arts from the priests’ constrictive prescripts. From then on, gods and Pharaohs could be depicted in poses and scenes from daily life. Akhnaton’s loving hands and his beautiful wife Nefertiti are examples of this.
