El Greco (the Greek) originally trained as a icon painter. In 1567 he travelled to Venice (Crete was then a Venetian possession) and may have trained under Titian (according to the miniaturist Giulio Clovio) and Tintoretto. Whatever the truth, he stayed in Venice for two years before journeying to Rome. There, he was influenced by Mannerism.
At 36, he moved and settled in the then religious capital of Spain, Toledo (south of Madrid). Here he forged a successful career as a painter of altarpieces and portraits.
Trivia:
- Always signed his works in Greek characters. Sometimes followed the signature with Kres (Cretan)
- Influenced by Michelangelo
- Referred to in a Cretan document as a master painter in 1566
