The last film of Rainer Weiner Fassbinder is, unfortunately, disappointing. His attempt to put the mystical homosexual world of French writer Jean Genet ultimately fails because Genet's rich prose is nigh impossible to capture on celluloid but Fassbinder's attempt is sometimes fascinating, sometimes tedious in about equal measure. There is curiousity value in this strange tale of a young sailor, Querelle, who fascinates all who come into contact with him but who seems more absorbed in himself. It seems to be set in the 1930s but is timeless and stylized. A boat on which Querelle works pulls into a port in Brest, France. Film is all studio work without any pretence at realism. It ties up at a jetty which has a bar and a bordello run by Jeanne Moreau. Querelle, played with a sort of dreamlike intensity by the late Brad Davis, is soon mixed up in this strange world. yul brynner | christopher plummer | romy schneider
