Director Jacques Tourneur was a dab
hand at many styles of film-making.
Out West, he responded to the
landscape with a natural eye, turning
out this clever but forgotten
Argentinian-set western.
Although not ideally cast, Rory Calhoun does well as the disaffected gaucho of the title, who greets the arrival of civilisation on the pampas by organising outlaw resistance. It's an interesting concept, and Tourneur's direction is striking.
