    MOVIE REVIEW

Ealing's first foray into the occult, with a curious story about a bunch of travellers staying at an inn that was bombed out of existence a year earlier. Through contact with the strange landlord and his daughter, each makes some personal readjustment and goes away a changed person. There was a short-lived vogue for this kind of thing, probaly started by J.B. Priestley.

    INFO. FROM EALING FOREVER BOOK

Opened in the UK in April 1944.

Francoise Rosay was at the time the grande dame of the French cinema. She was in enforced English exile because of the war. She would also appear in Ealing's Johnny Frenchman.

Glynis Johns is the landlord's daughter who casts no shadow.

I would love to make this page different to the countless Dvd pages on The Halfway House that are out there in the cut and paste world that is the web. You know, brief outline, thumbnail of cover and, if you're lucky, the back cover. Very little content is original and you'll find that on alot of releases. Any reviews leave out the fact that each movie has a heart and soul and touches people in different ways down the years. So if you would like to add anything on the film, whether good or bad, or trivia on the film - indeed anything like how it made you feel when you first saw it - then e-mail me here (ihuppert5@aol.com) and I'll add it within 24 hours, crediting you with just your first name.

    I'll start it off:

I put no trust in mile stones
    Disparate hopes
    Halfway homes

Boy this is a strange film. The setting at a remote country inn in Wales lends the film an ethereal qualty but there is an indefinable strangeness in the atmosphere which starts and ends with the inn. The build up before is standard fare from British cinema of the 1940s - what comes after is a riveting view of the space in-between, the corridor between life & death, the hallway seperating the here and the there. Otherness. Haunting otherness.
