        Hundertwasser is one of the most important artists & architects to emerge from the latter half of the 20th-century and is certainly by far the most important Austrian one. (Added in-depth info on Hundertwasser prints here).

          Born in Vienna on December 15th, 1928 as Friedrich Stowasser, the following year saw the death of his father, a technical civil servant and officer in World War I. By 1934, at the tender age of six, Friedrich had produced his first juvenile drawings. 1943 saw his first deliberate crayon naturalistic drawings. It was also during this year that about 69 Jewish relations on his mother's side were deported and killed during the 2nd World War.

        He achieved his school-leaving certificate in 1948 & spent three months at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, under Prof. Robin Christian Andersen. At around this time he became lastingly influenced by a Walter Kampmann exhibition in the Albertina and by Schiele exhibitions.

        1949 saw the start of extensive travelling: North Italy, Tuscany, Rome, Napoli & Sicily. In Florence he met René Brô and followed him to Paris. Developed his own style and adopted the name Hundertwasser.

        The following year Hundertwasser stayed with Brô and the Dumage family in Paris. Left the Ecole des Beaux Arts on his first day. Painted two murals together with Brô in Saint Mandé.

        In 1952, Hundertwasser had his first exhibition at the Art Club of Vienna. This was during a brief flirtation with decorative-abstract.

        1953 saw Hundertwasser paint his first spiral. Also had his second stay in Paris, working in Brô's studio, St.Maurice. Second Art Club exhibition, Vienna.

        The following year Hundertwasser had his First exhibition in Paris at Studio Paul Facchetti. Developed the theory of transautomatism and began to number his works.

        He married in 1958 in Gibraltar (divorced 1960). Read his Mouldiness Manifesto against Rationalism in Architecture at a congress at Seckau monastery.

        In 1959 he received the Sanbra Prize at the 5th Sao Paulo Biennial. In the same year also founded the Pintorarium, a universal academy of all creative fields, together with Ernst Fuchs and Arnulf Rainer. As guest lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, he drew the Endless Line with Bazon Brock and Herbert Schuldt. Resigned lectureship following a scandal.

        Visited Japan in 1960. Received the Mainichi Prize at the 6th International Art Exhibition, Tokyo. Had a very successful exhibiton in Tokyo. Painted in Hokkaido and returned to Vienna via Siberia. After his divorce from his first wife came through in 1960, the following year Hundertwasser married Yuko Ikewada (divorced 1966). Also in 1961 he had a very successful retrospective at the Venice Biennial.

        Unhappy in love, in 1966 following his divorce from his second wife, Ferry Radax filmed the first documentary on Hundertwasser in La Picaudière and in the Austrian Waldviertel region (Lower Austria).

        1967 saw Hundertwasser travel to Uganda and the Sudan. A touring exhibition of his work was seen in galleries in Paris, London, Geneva & Berlin. Nude demonstration for the Right to a Third Skin was seen in Munich.

        A second nude speech and reading of architecture boycott manifesto Los von Loos (Loose from Loos) was seen in Vienna in 1968. Travelled to California to prepare a cataloge for a museum exhibition at the University of California, Berkeley, (organized by Herschel Chipp). Also sailed from Sicily to Venice in the San Giuseppe T, an old wooden sailing ship. Converted the ship into the Regentag in dockyards in the Venice lagoon.

        Worked on the Olympia poster for Munich in Lengmoos in 1971.

        Collaborated with Peter Schamoni on the film Hundertwasser Regentag in 1972. Worked on the Regentag print portfolio at the Dietz printshop in Lengmoos, Bavaria. Friendship forged with Joram Harel. On the TV show Wünsch Dir was (Make a wish) demonstrated for roof forestation and individual facade design. Published manifesto Your window right - your tree duty. The Regentag film is shown in Cannes. Sailed around Italy to Elba in the Regentag. Death of his mother.

        First portfolio with Japanese woodcuts: Nana Hyaku Mizu was seen in 1971. Hundertwasser was the first European painter to have his works cut by Japanese masters. Took part in the Triennale di Milano (Milano), where 15 Tree Tenants were planted in windows on the Via Manzoni.

        1975 saw the publication of the manifesto Humus Toilet in Munich. Designed postage stamp for Austria: Spiral Tree, engraved by Wolfgang Seidel, the first in a series Modern Art in Austria. The world travelling exhibition tour Austria presents Hundertwasser to the Continents (with catalogue) began at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Continued: Luxembourg, Marseille & Cairo. The Albertina exhibition of his entire graphic oeuvre began a tour in the USA: New York & Boston.

        World touring exhibition in 1976: Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Reykjavik, Copenhagen & Dakar. Albertina graphic tour in the USA: Hanover, Brooklyn, Maryland.

        In 1978 he designed the Peace Flag for the Near East with a green Arab crescent moon and blue Star of David against a white background and published his Peace Manifesto. World touring exhibition: Mexico City, Montreal, Toronto, Brussels, Budapest. Albertina graphic tour: Canada, Germany, Morocco.

        1979 - Peace Flag and Peace Manifesto was sent by Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky to heads of state in the Near East. The Austrian State Printing Office printed three stamps for the Republic of Senegal and one for the Republic of the Cape Verde Islands, engraved by Wolfgang Seidel.

        In 1980 Hundertwasser Day in Washington, D.C. was seen on the 18th November, proclaimed by Mayor Marion Barry. Jr.. Planted the first 12 of 100 trees on Judiciary Square, Washington, D.C.; presented the anti-nuclear poster Plant Trees Avert Nuclear Peril to Ralph Nader's Critical Mass Energy Project, Washington, D.C. along with the environmental poster Arche Noah 2000 for Germany. Spoke on ecology, against nuclear power and for an architecture befitting man and nature in the US Senate, the Corcoran Museum, the Phillips Collection, all in Washington; in Berlin on the occasion of the 2nd European Ecology Symposium, at the Technological Universities in Vienna and Oslo.

        1981 saw the speech in Vienna on false art against nuclear energy and negative avantgarde in modern art whilst receiving the Grand Austrian State Prize on 14 February (awarded in 1980). Austrian Nature Conservation Prize. Appointed head of a Master School for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Wrote Guidelines for the Hundertwasser Master School.

        As architecture doctor in 1982, redesigned the facade of the Rosenthal Factory of Selb. Made ceramic tongue-beards for the facade of the Museum Rupertinum, Salzburg. Donated poster Artists for Peace to the Krefeld Initiative. Hundertwasser Week in San Francisco, proclaimed by Dianne Feinstein, Mayor of San Francisco, to mark the presentation of the two posters Save the Whales and Save the Seas to Greenpeace and Jacques Cousteau Society. Presented the poster You are a Guest of Nature to the Centre of Environmental Education, Washington D.C..

        1983 saw an edition of six postage stamps for the United Nations (2 each for New York, Geneva and Vienna), engraved by Wolfgang Seidel. Cornerstone of the Hundertwasser House was laid in Vienna. Designed a flag for New Zealand, the Koru, an Unfurled Fern.

        Received the gold medal for the most beautiful postage stamp from Italy's President Sandro Pertini, for the 1,20 sFr stamp for the UN in Geneva in 1983. Took an active part in the campaign to save Hainburg wetlands. Camped there for a week. Designed the poster Hainburg - Die freie Natur ist unsere Freiheit (Free Nature is Our Freedom).

        On 17 February 1986 the Hundertwasser House was turned over to the tenants; 70,000 visitors visited the Open House. 1,000 green Koru-flags were unfurled in New Zealand; great interest came from the population, press and parliament alike. Designed Uluru - Down Under Flag for Australia. Worked on the design of the Brockhaus encyclopaedia, through 1986 & into the following year.

        Cept Europalia 1987, a stamp depicting the Hundertwasser-House, appeared in March in Austria. Designed the Luna-Luna poster for André Heller. Designed the poster and redesigned the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels for Europalia. Drafted a new design for the Church of St. Barbara in Bärnbach, Styria, and planned a children's day-care centre in Heddernheim, Frankfurt.

        In 1988, at the invitation of the Mayor of Vienna, Helmut Zilk, he undertook the task of redesigning Vienna's Spittelau District Heating Plant. Teached at the International Summer-Academy in Salzburg (Human Architecture in Harmony with Nature with Efthymios Warlamis and Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt). Awarded the Golden Medal of Honour of the City of Vienna and the Golden Medal of Honour of the State of Styria.

        1989 saw Hundertwasser build his Hügelwiesenland in the Meadow Hills (Rolling Hills) model. In 1990 he worked on architectural realisations: KunstHausWien; Motorway-Restaurant Bad Fischau; AGIP Service Station Vienna; HBW Incinerator Spittelau Vienna; In the Meadows, Bad Soden, Germany; Village Shopping Mall, Vienna; Textile Factory Muntlix, Vorarlberg; Winery Napa Valley, California.

        1991 and the completion of KunstHausWien which opened on April, 9. Conceptualised and developed architectural projects thus: the Thermal Village Blumau, Styria, for Rogner Austria, which is based on Hundertwasser's Rolling Hills. Town planning for Griffen, Carinthia, Austria. Housing consisted of Living beneath the Rain Tower in Plochingen, Germany. Presentation of the Hundertwasser Art Jeton designed for Casino Austria.

        1992 and Hundertwasser designed 4 telephone cards for the Austrian Postal Service and a postage stamp commemorating the European Council Summit in Vienna 1993. In Tokyo Hundertwasser's 21st Century Clock Monument is installed. The Tokyo Broadcasting System broadcasted a TV documentary on Hundertwasser's architecture and his ecological commitment.

        Worked on the Hundertwasser-Bible project in 1993.

        Involved in the campaign opposing Austria's joining the European Union in 1994.

        Worked on Blumau Hot Springs Village in 1995. Additionally, redesigned the Martin-Luther-Grammar School in Wittenberg, Germany. His design for the exterior of a Boeing B 757 for the German Condor airline was rejected.

        1996 saw the unveiling of the Danube ship, MS Vindobona, redesigned by Hundertwasser. Awarded the Tourism Prize of Viennese Industry 1996.

        Hundertwasser was commissioned with the architectural project Die Wald-Spirale von Darmstadt (The Forest-Spiral of Darmstadt) in 1997. Exhibition of stamp designs, graphic work and architecture models took place at the Philatelia in Cologne. Awarded the Grand Prix of German philately. Worked on 366 individual book cover designs for Bertelsmann Book Club. Inauguration of the Rogner Thermal Bath in Blumau, Styria. Designed and presented the model of the architecture project MOP for the city of Osaka, Japan, and Hoch-Wiesen-Haus (High Groves) for Dresden, Germany. Architectural design and model for a farmers's market in Altenrhein, Switzerland.

        1998 saw a retrospective museum exhibition at the Institute Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt, Germany. The Submersion of Atlantis, a ceramic-mural was installed at Oriente station in Lisbon. Created and donated an original poster Among Trees You Are at Home to support an ecological project for afforestation of the desert in Israel.

        Hundertwasser lived and worked in New Zealand in 1999. Architectural projects were: Sludge Center, Osaka; The Green Citadel of Magdeburg and Uelzen Railroad Station, Germany. Reconstruction work for the new Kawakawa Public Toilet, New Zealand. Rejuvenation treatment for the ship Regentag. Designed the layout and book covers for his oeuvre raisonné books.

        2000 saw architectural projects for Teneriffa and Dillingen/Saar, Germany. Died on Saturday, February, 19, in the Pacific, on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 from a heart attack. According to his wishes he was being buried in harmony with nature on his land in New Zealand, in the Garden of the Happy Deads, under a tulip tree.
