Having not found commercial success with his first three films, Ingmar Bergman turned to Dagmar Edqvist’s adaptation of her own novel. The film tells of a young man who after being blinded in a tragic accident begins a soul searching journey that eventually sees him falling in love with a young woman. This is a heart wrenching story that successfully combines surreal dream sequences with breathtaking imagery, that served as evidence that Bergman was well on his way to becoming the master he is now rightly considered.
