Filmed on Fårö, Gotlands län, Sweden, the island Bergman lived until the end of his life. Filmed in the aftermath of Ingmar Bergman's break-up with Liv Ullmann on the island where they had lived together. This ranks among Bergman's most powerful, personal and pessimistic statements on the human condition. Utilising forbidding island landscape and the recurrence of dreams to emphasise the isolation of the protagonists, Bergman explores the impossibility of escaping from one's past and finding contentment in an irrational and violent society. Hell is definitely other people in this godless place, especially once Liv Ullmann drags Max von Sydow out of his reclusive self-sufficiency and into confrontation with both his neighbours and her ghosts.
