Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson are remarkable throughout this intimate and often painful portrait, which Bergman originally made as six 50 minute episodes for TV and subsequently edited into a full-length feature. Marianne has to cope with the infidelity of her husband who she discovers is involved with a younger woman. Bergman examines the trauma of a beleaguered marriage largely in close-up creating an exhaustive study of the doubt, despair, confusion and loneliness experienced by Marianne.
