An honest, probing look at a marriage and its disintegration following an extra-marital affair. Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson are remarkable throughout this intimate and often painful portrait, which Bergman originally made as six 50 minute episodes for TV and subsequently edited into a full-length
feature. Marianne has to cope with the infidelity of her husband who she discovers is involved with a younger woman.
Bergman examines the trauma of a beleaguered marriage largely in close-up creating an exhaustive study of the doubt, despair, confusion and loneliness experienced by Marianne.
Bergman's film is stylistically stark in the tradition of
Face to Face and is brought to painful life by the superb photography of frequent collaboration Sven Nykvist.
