Apolitical concert violinists Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann take refuge on a remote island but are dragged back into society when civil war soldiers arrive in huge numbers. As loyalties shift around a corrupt, quisling colonel, Gunnar Björnstrand, Ullmann's strength and tenderness come to the fore, while von Sydow turns into a selfish, immature, treacherous coward.
