The Rite may have been Bergman’s first made for television film, but it explores an issue that he continued to return to throughout his career, the artists place in society and the often troubled place between men and women. Filmed with a cast of just four principle actors, the story revolves around three close friends, including a husband and wife couple, who make up a theatre troupe. They have been prohibited from performing a short piece called ‘The Rite’ and are brought before the local magistrate on charges of obscenity. Once there they are ruthlessly interrogated and they are required to account for themselves and their work. Through this interrogation it is revealed that a partner of couple is having an affair with the third member of the group. Sombre, sexually explicit and surreal, The Rite was made during Bergman’s tenure as head of Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre and was written, he say’s as, ‘a way to channel his fury’ at the constant reprimands he constantly received. It is widely recognised as a ‘bold step forward in Bergman’s analysis of human isolation’ - Time Out Film Guide.
