        Winner of the Grand Prix Award for Best Film at the 1958 Berlin Film Festival, Ingmar Bergman´s classic Wild Strawberries concerns an elderly academic, introverted and emotionally arid, who makes a journey to collect a university award and en route relives his past through nightmares, dreams and memories as space and time are broken apart to reveal various levels of his inner life.

        Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjostrom) travels with his daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) to receive an honorary doctorate for his lifelong contribution to medicine. His journey is interrupted by meetings with people on the road; from Sara (Bibi Andersson), an irressible girl hitcher reminds Isak of the girl he lost through his selfishness, to a quarrelling married couple who remind him of his own tragic marriage, and the journey becomes an exploration and insight into his own failings.

        Victor Sjostrom, a celebrated film director in his own right, best known for his silent work including the Hollywood masterpiece The Wind, gives a remarkably moving performance as the aged academic. Bergman´s smiles and tears on a summer´s day make for his most overtly symbolic work shifting skillfully between past and present, dream and reality.

        Filled with richly observed characters and a real feeling for the joys of nature and youth, Wild Strawberries is one of Bergman´s warmest and finest films.
