Jacopo Bellini Follower of
A. Pisanello and
Gentile da Fabriano. His rare
extant paintings show him to have been competent rather than outstanding, and his importance lies in his interest in the return to
antiquity and the new scientific approach to the
subjects of painting. Two valuable sketchbooks
of his exist. Many of these sketches, which
include figure studies for larger compositions
and show an interest in landscape, architectural
design and the problems of perspective, were
used by his sons Gentile and Giovanni and his son-in-law Mantegna.
