        Jean Simmons

The first movie I saw Jean Simmons in was 'Footsteps in the Fog' with her husband Stewart Granger. I thought she was one of the most beautiful actress's of all time as well as brilliant actress. I was saddened to hear of her death. She was unique. Also so I saw her in 'Daises in December one of her roles for television.

        Dearly missed.

I was very sad to here of Jeans passing a truly golden star, one of the best of her time, a beautiful woman and a great actress - Fee Cleary from the Thornbirds - one of my most favourite - watch it all the time. May you rest in peace Jean.

        Jean Simmons

Since her death I have been surfing the web and reading about Jean. She had a wicked sense of humor, and referred to herself as a "giggler" during some movie takes. Something she apparently had in common with Lawrence Olivier.

There's an excellent interview with her on the ICONS Radio Hour, where she tells interviewers Steven Bogart and John Mullholland of her various movies through the decades.

Her childhood was very improvised - and when her father died she was only 13. Her family survived the London Blitz, although her mother had told her that if they were going to die, she'd prefer it be in their house.

She supported her mother in the early years through her acting. She had a self-deprecating sense of humor - referring to herself as "the girl from Cricklewood". That's a poor area of London.

She starred opposite most of the leading actors in Hollywood in the 50s - Olivier, Peck, Lancaster, Tracy, Newman are just a few names off the top of my head. ..She could take a mediocre movie and polish it through her presence and acting. .

Hollywood can be a cruel place, and starting in her 40s the big roles were drying up.

She battled alcoholism and eventually with the help of the Betty Ford Clinic (thank God for Betty Ford, she said) - she overcame it.

Her second husband, Richard Brooks, said that "every man would come up to me and tell me they loved Jean".

My impression of her is that while her beauty and acting ability catapulted her to international stardom, she never let it "go to her head".

She certainly didn't let stardom change the way she treated people.

There is a wonderful testimony from a woman who was in the production crew of a movie she was making in the 1990s. Jean befriended her and told her to come to her house if she was ever in Los Angeles.

She came and was surprised to be invited as a guest - staying in the bedroom next to hers.

Jean touched the famous and not-so-famous. She was a good person, and the world is poorer without her.

        - Bill Brandt, Sacramento CA

        Jean Simmons

What a wonderful actress. She popped up in so many great films early in her career. Probaly says more about me but I preferred her in the 1940s British films (Way to the Stars, Black Narcissus, Great Expectations) rather than the 1950s & 60s Hollywood blockbusters she is most famous for. Smaller parts, yes, but when she was on the screen you couldn't take your eyes off her. Anyone out there share my preference or is it just me?

        She will be sadly missed.

        - Paul
