EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)
The quintessential Johnny Depp movie, with Mr Weird himself triumphantly cast as a boy with scissors for hands. He's befriended by an Avon lady (Dianne Wiest) and falls for her daughter (Winona Ryder). This clever, dark-toned fairy-tale for adults is so moving it's been known to make grown men weep. Vincent Price has a lovely cameo as the lad's creator.
Johnny Depp's enchanting performance as the strange man-child with scissors for hands is the compelling centrepiece of Tim Burton's dark and disarming fantasy creation.
Tim Burton's bewitchingly oddball Beauty and the Beast fairy tale is a superlative masterpiece and one of the best fantasy films ever made. It matches the spellbinding work of Hans Christian Andersen in terms of haunting power, exquisite charm and dark romance, with Johnny Depp's sensitive rendition of
Vincent Price's "Punkenstein" creation also a major revelation - humanoid Edward being unable to touch the things he loves because of his razor fingers is potent symbolism of the highest mythic order.

BENNY AND JOON (1993)
You'll either find this so-so romantic fable a whimsical joy or annoyingly eccentric, as beguiling man-child Johnny Depp woos mentally unstable Mary Stuart Masterson, much to her brother Aidan Quinn's concern. It's one of those "lunatics are saner than the rest of us" polemics, admittedly heartfelt but, ultimately, too underwritten to put its message across properly.

DON JUAN DeMARCO (1995)
This enchanting feel-good fable showcases a masked Johnny Depp as the world's greatest lover on the verge of suicide. As a burnt-out shrink, Marlon Brando must prick the cod Casanova's fantasy bubble in therapy sessions or have him committed. Instead, through Depp's grandiose, poetic delusions,
Brando re-examines the importance of passion in his own marriage to Faye Dunaway. A scintillating lyrical tone and magical realism make director Jeremy Leven's film a wonderfully funny, touching odyssey through a red-hot landscape of Latin rhythms, virile Valentinos, swooning senoritas and duelling Zorros.
Part tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Hollywood swashbucklers of old and part feel-good romantic fantasy, Jeremy Leven's enchanting film follows the adventures of flamboyant modern-day Don Juan Johnny Depp and prosaic psychiatrist Marlon Brando, whose dull love life he ignites with 'celestial fires'.
Johnny Depp stars in this adorable film about a fantasist who believes he is Lord Byron's character Don Juan. Depp plays him winningly and partners Marlon Brando (as his shrink) with panache.
