Dark Dear Heart (Holly Cole feat. Jon Hassell)
US cd album
(1997)
Instead of opting for the full-on pop diva route, Cole travels a far more interesting path towards the mainstream that picks up on the vapor trails of I Can See Clearly Now and her album of Waits covers. I've Just Seen a Face retains echoes of its signature melody, but is otherwise a smart reinvention, and Sheryl Crow's You Want More or the slinky Aaron Davis co-write Timbuktu make fine follow-ups. Larry Klein's spartan production shines in particular on the title track. --Jeff Bateman

Drag (K.D. Lang feat. Jon Hassell)
US cd album
(1997)
Sensual, seductive, and above all smoky, the latest from k.d. lang is a collection of a dozen tunes that all have some connection to smoking--usually in the romantic, post-coital sense--done up in a lush, orchestrated fashion. Some of these tunes are standards, such as Smoke Dreams and My Last Cigarette, while others are just plain strange selections given some of the oddest readings imaginable. Case in point: the cover of Steve Miller's The Joker. lang's voice is an incredible instrument, and it's a treat to hear her vamping. But you have to wonder what she's up to, especially because she seems to just say no to tobacco herself, --Jim Derogatis

Nomad Soul (Baaba Maal feat. Jon Hassell)
US cd album
(1998)
On Nomad Soul Baaba Maal has stayed true to his Fulani herdsman roots, singing as he travels and working with the best of those he meets along the way. On his seventh U.S. release, you will find collaborations with ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Jon Hassell (Hassell on final track, 12-minute Lam Lam, with Howie B and Eno), Celtic influences with Irish singers the Screaming Orphans, and a duet with reggae star Luciano. Afro Celt Sound System mainstay Simon Emmerson produces, as do Groucho Smykle, Ron Aslan, and Mykael Riley. This CD is a successful blend of diverse musical influences united by the solid Senegalese sound of Baaba Maal. Maal and his band Daande Lenol are known for extraordinary live performances full of passionate playing and gravity-defying dancing but Maal also makes carefully refined studio recordings using top producers. The result is a polished album that does not lose Maal's vibrancy. --Jeff Grubb

The End Of Violence: Score From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (Ry Cooder
feat. Jon Hassell)
US cd album soundtrack
(1997)
Over the past two decades, guitarist and preservationist
Ry Cooder has quietly forged one of the most consistently compelling musical
careers in film. His 1997 music for director Wim Wenders's uneven exercise in
Hollywood metaphor-mongering begins with typically (dare we say it) Cooder-esque exercises in
spacious, loping bottleneck electric guitar over subtle, ominous electronic effects, then
interweaves cool jazz and even hip-hop influences into one of the musician's most subtle, satisfying
efforts yet (featuring the talents of mixer Howie B., accordionist Flaco Jimenez, trumpeter
Jon Hassell, drummer Jim Keltner, tenor sax player Gil Bernal, guitarist
James "Blood" Ulmer, and son Joachim Cooder on percussion). As is so
often the case with Cooder's work, it's a score to savor when the
film has faded from memory. --Jerry McCulley

The Million Dollar Hotel: Music From The Motion Picture (Various Artists
feat. Bono & Jon Hassell)
US cd album soundtrack
(2000)
Wim Wenders's films are inextricably linked to their companion soundtracks,
with music playing as essential a role as any star actor--just see Wings of Desire, Until the End of the World and
Paris, Texas for proof. And now we have The Million Dollar Hotel. On this outing
Wenders turns to U2's Bono Bill Frisell , Brian Eno , Jon Hassell, and Daniel Lanois.
Even without the film, the songs resonate with a haunting glory.
--Tod Nelson
Hassell appears in front of the camera as one of the hotel's many "quirky" denizens. Good soundtrack with standout
Hassell composition Amsterdam Blue (Cortege), a marvellous, slow blues. Hassell
also on the Danny Sabre remix of Satellite of Love with the film's star, Milla Jovovich

Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ (Peter Gabriel
feat. Jon Hassell)
US cd album soundtrack
(1989)
To call Peter Gabriel's Passion a pivotal recording in the development of
the world music genre would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so
undeniably huge is, of course, its global reach but also its expert handling of what could've
easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and
Baaba Mal bring
strong Middle Eastern and African voicing to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and
doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple
streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that
takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and
phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. To be certain, the intertwined rhythms
stand out but always do so both unto themselves and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that
Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a
stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett
