Solid British Performer
Personable, good-looking British leading man and supporting player equally comfortable in comedic and dramatic roles. Bitten by the acting bug in the mid 1930s (after working as a fur trapper and engineer's assistant), More logged screen time in several films, beginning with 1935's Look Up and Laugh before interrupting his career to serve with His Majesty's Navy during World War 2. After years of playing in support, More landed costarring parts in two smash hits: the carrace comedy Genevieve (1953) and the hilarious Doctor in the House (1954). Their successes made him an "overnight" film star at age 40.
He quickly became one of England's most popular leading men, following his comedy successes with solid dramatic performances in films like The Deep Blue Sea (1955), A Night to Remember (1958), and Sink the Bismarck! (1960). He took more lighthearted leads in The Admirable Crichton (1957), The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw (1959), and a remake of Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1959).
