        Leonora Carrington

Leonora has been among my favourite painters for many years. I discovered her work at the same time as finding the work of other female surrealists like Frida Kahlo, Leonor Fini and Meret Oppenheim through Whitney Chadwick's book, Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement. For me it was an astonishing find and in my book usurped the work of their more celebrated male counterparts like Dali and Ernst. The female surrealists left a body of work that is breathtaking in its mystical, ethereal beauty.

I would say that above them all, even Kahlo and just above Remedios Varo (though on a level with Leonor Fini), was Leonora's work. Magical, mystical, she was an exquisite alchemist.

Immensely sad to hear of her passing; she was one of our last living links with the Surrealists. I think now the only one left is Dorothea Tanning who was a 100 last year.

My thoughts go to her two sons.

        Leonora Carrington

She walked through the valley of dreams and took us with her. An unforgettable journey. Her life encompassed the epochs of the 20th-Century and her life was a myriad of possibilities:

The magical art of painting; the reluctant debutante; Ernst, Surrealism and the femme sorciere; Heaven and Hell: wartime experiences; the alchemical kitchen: domestic space as sacred space; esoteric interests; the emergence of a group of female artists who, it seems, as each day passes, more and more people discover and realise were as important as any group of artists from the last 100 years or so

Her work once discovered is never forgotten. Strange figures in strange landscapes filtered through the mind of the surrealist woman.

        Gone now but never gone.

As I'm in the UK and have never been to Mexico it would be interesting to hear from anyone in Mexico as to how big Leonora's work was there. Did everyone know of her work or was she like here, a cult figure?

Wonderful artist though. And what a life!

        Leonora Carrington

I was looking for some publications on her work yesterday and was sadden to discover that she had passed the day before. Her paintings have always drawn me inward as if there is a personal message there for me. She was a stunning force as an artist
