Foreword

Published by The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK, in association with Marlborough Graphics, London, on the occasion of the exhibition shown at The Fitzwilliam Museum, 6 March to 10 June 2007, and at Abbot Hall Art Gallery, 15 April to 21 June 2007

When the Fitzwilliam Museum bought a major Auerbach painting from James Kirkman in 1993 with the help of the National Art Collection Fund (now the Arts Fund), it was an acknowledgement of the artist's stature as one of the leading figurative painters working in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century. At the time, Frank Auerbach expressed his pleasure that one of his best paintings should have found a home in one of his favourite museums (the Fitzwilliams' Frans Hals portrait is one of his favourite paintings), but neither he nor the Museum could foresee that in the next decade Cambridge would become one of the major repositories of his work.

This exhibition of the Fitzwilliam Museum's complete collection of Frank Auerbach's intaglio prints is a testament to the generosity and thoughtfulness of several donors who have close connections to the artist. The collection was initiated by the gift in 1994 of two etchings of Ruth Bromberg, given by Ruth and Joseph Bromberg in memory of their son Michael Bromberg. This was complemented in 1997 by the acquisition of the two copper plates etched for one of these prints, accompanied by demonstration proofs, given by the artist and his printers Mark and Dorothea Balakjian. The collection was then transformed by the extraordinary donation from James Kirkman of the remainder of the artist's prints to date (together with two sketchbooks). The Fitzwilliam has been able to keep the collection up to date into the twenty first century entirely due to Frank Auerbach himself, who has donated an impression of each new print on completion.

This is the first time that Auerbach's complete etchings and drypoints have been displayed since the exhibition organised by his dealer, Marlborough Graphics, in 1990. Since then the artist has completed a further dozen prints. The relatively small number is due to his main concentration on his work as a painter; the compensation for the viewer is that when Auerbach does turn to etching, he approaches it with the same intensity and rigour. It is again through the support of Marlborough that this catalogue has been made possible, together with the opportunity for other venues to share in the exhibition ...
