It seems strange that a country of France's size has really only ever produced two genuinely world-class fighters. One was the mercurial Georges Carpentier and the other this man, Marcellin "Marcel" Cerdan, who was born in the then French Algeria. How good? Well, Jake La Motta, who beat Cerdan for the World Middleweight Championship, rated him as one of the greatest fighters he ever fought, just below Sugar Ray Robinson. So he must of been pretty good! I mean anyone who could knock out Tony Zale must have been rather special!

In a way his fame is now imprisoned by his love affair with Edith Piaf, at least outside of France. While she is a cultural icon and she lives on through her music and the mythology of her life, he is seen by many as merely part of that affir and nothing more. The guy she wrote Hymne l'amour. But you really have to look beyond the bubble of that affair. What he did in the ring places him with the pantheons of boxing. He was, at the very least, one of the finest boxers to come out of Europe. I personally would rate Randolph Turpin the best European boxer ever with Cerdan second.

        THE CASABLANCA CLOUTER:

Marcel Cerdan began his professional career in 1934, all of his early bouts being fought in North Africa. He made his European debut in 1937 and won the French welterweight title in 1938 and the European welterweight championship in 1939. With the advent of World War II, Cerdan served in the French navy until France fell to the Germans; he returned to his career in 1941. In 1944 Cerdan competed in the Inter-Allied championship tournaments and won all of his matches, which gave him international stature. In 1945 he moved up to the middleweight division, where in that same year he became the French champion and in 1947 the European champion.

After making appearances in the United States in 1946, 1947, and early 1948, he went to Jersey City, New Jersey, to fight Tony Zale for the world middleweight title on September 21, 1948, and was the winner in a 12th-round knockout. Cerdan was unsuccessful when he made his first and only title defense against Jake La Motta (Raging Bul) on June 16, 1949, in Detroit. The fighters fell to the canvas during a first-round scuffle, and Cerdans shoulder was injured. He was able only to fight one-handed until he retired to his corner after the 10th round, when La Motta was awarded the victory by technical knockout. En route to New York for a return bout with La Motta, Cerdan was killed in a plane crash in the Azores. Cerdan fought in 110 professional matches, recording 106 victories (64 by knockout).

Cerdans personal life was of as much interest as his career in the ring. He was a hero to the French, and his affair with the French singer Edith Piaf (he was married at the time with three children) and his early death created a romantic aura that led to numerous books and films on his life. Cerdan was inducted into Ring magazines Boxing Hall of Fame in 1962.
