With more than seven hundred black and white photographs and sixteen paintings in full color.

Through the years, the Civil War continues to have an awesome spellbinding hold on Americans. Althought he causes for this fascination are varied and complex, there is one particular reason that stands out: the beginnings of photography. For the first time, a visually accurate photograph, rather than a painting's subjective, stylistic viewpoint, represented a war - one that literally tore the country apart. Even though photography in those early years was so rudimentary that spontaneity was out of the question and each picture was posed and painstakingly planned, the photographed faces and scenes of the Civil War cannot help but mirror a regiment's inner courage, the tension in the eyes of a soldier who is still reeling from a battle's hell, the desolation of a body-strewn battlefield after an engagement. These are images that haunt us still.

Nowhere is this pictorial record more penetratingly and vibrantly presented than in Mathew Brady's Illustrated History of the Civil War. Complete with sixteen dramatic paintings in full color by Henry Odgen and other fine miltary artists, and more than seven hundred black and white photographs by Mathew Brady, the now legendary official photographer of the Civil War, this impressive book gives a provacative, pictorial account of the war as it was happening.

But this is more than a collection of photographs. It is also a comprehensive narrative of the war - complete with maps and chronological summaries of the battle fought, the generals who led them, and the casualties sustained in each engagement. Benson J. Lossing, who wrote the authoritative text, was an historian whom Oliver Wendell Holmes claimed did more than any other man to make history "popular and interesting."

Here, in words and pictures, are vivid depictions of incidents from the famous battles of Fredericksburg and Shiloh, Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry. Here, too, are the faces that made this war so memorable: the moving photographs of Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, and Robert E. Lee, in thoughtful moments, as well as the anonymous stares of the men in full regimental dress going off to battle. here, too, are the faces of slavery, of bravery and abandonment. of the dead and dying.

This book gives an historically exciting account of the only American war that pitted brother against brother, family against family. As President Woodrow Wilson said in a speech on Memorial Day, 1915, the Civil War "was not the salvation of the Union, it was the rebirth of the Union."

Here, in a stunning collector's edition, the Civil War is also reborn - in dramatic words and compelling pictures.

Card payments are very expensive so I prefer the old fashioned methods of payment. And let's face it, the good old fashioned cheque - well nothing is more secure than that.
