- Filmed in 1997, this eight part documentary was done just in time for if done today, ten years on, it would mean that many of the elderly witnesses to the events of Nazi Germany would have been dead, and without their input, the power of the piece would have been somewhat diminished.
For this is a documentary in which the "ordinary people" make it work combined with the unseen archive footage. Through this combination we get to understand the rise and fall of the Third Reich for it is these "ordinary people" who made the events unfold on a day-to-day basis by taking part and it is those who witnessed atrocities whose stories combined with footage give us an understanding of what life was like then.
Of course, one is drawn to the episode of the Holocaust. It's as harrowing as can be because of the minute detail it goes into on the events.
Also of interest is the focus on
Adolf Hitler. On a day-to-day basis he must have been the laziest leader ever! Rarely getting out of bed before midday, he preferred to leave affairs of state to sort themselves out. He seemed to enjoy subordinates fighting and boy did they fight, but the result was an organisational vacuum at the centre of state.
The interviews with the unrepentant Nazis are excruciating. The excuses they use for their actions is stuff like: "It was a long time ago" or the Shaggy excuse: "It wasn't me" Needless to say, the viewer doesn't warm to these people.

On the DVD: The Nazis: A Warning from History has six episodes spread across two discs. Picture and sound are standard TV quality; notable is the evocative use of Brahms's German Requiem as the series' theme. Other than subtitles, there are no extra features. Extras aren't needed really as everything is in the documentaries themselves.
