Neville Chamberlain (1869 - 1949) ~ Brief Notes

Neville Chamberlain was stricken with incurable cancer in 1940. He was near the end and reflected: `Few men can have known such a tremendous reverse of fortune in so short a time.' When he died shortly afterwards his prophecy was proved correct and little in the 70+ years since has altered that perception. The bumbling upper-class nice-but-dim persona like someone out of Jeeves & Wooster off on his flights to visit Hitler and trying to save the world from the very brink of war with a dapper moustache and the sword of truth. 'Peace for our time' and all that. For a brief moment it looked as though he'd been successful but war came in September 1939, the collapse of his own government followed in May 1940, and the military perils that soon followed meant he was viewed as the biggest failure as a Prime Minister the twentieth century ever saw.

Yet was it really like that? Can history be that easy? Didn't Hitler himself look back on Munich and feeled he had been fooled by the British and looked back on the meetings with Chamberlain with bitterness? The delay in war that Munich saw brought Britain much needed time to build a semblance of an army to fight back. That 'time' proved invaluable.

Perhaps one day he will be viewed less harshly by more people. The revision on him and his legacy has started and just perhaps it will gather pace. For he was a deeply clever man, honourable and gruffly loyal, and his achievements before the final years have been eclipsed by his dealings with Hitler. Cast in the shadows of Churchill's brilliance can be a cold, lonely place, I guess.

  • If you have any trivia or photos you would like to share please e-mail me here (ihuppert5@aol.com) and I will add it. Or maybe I heard it someplace else and am recycling it. Can't remember.

Will add more if and when time & funds permits. It costs to do these pages and with precious little money coming in (and there is a lot of free content here) it is sometimes hard to have the inspiration to expand the pages. Who else, after can, can afford to work for nothing? Would you? And these pages are like nothing else on the net. P.P.
