- Yes, this tops those bestest movies of all times polls that seem to be everywhere and yes film students and Orson fanatics will want to know the history behind every scene, but if I were you I would just sit back and watch this movie and just enjoy the banquet that is this movie. How could anyone so young produce such a work of art? Welles was 25 (yes, 25) years old when this film was made

There's nothing to fear in Harper Town...
except that is,
the worst in human evil
- Orson Welles directed and stars in The Stranger, a tense black-and-white thriller that Welles made for maverick producer Sam Speagle. Although many of Welles's most interesting scenes wound up on the cutting-room floor when Speagle reedited the film, The Stranger is still a multilayered, complex, and fascinating film. The scenes between Welles and Robinson are intellectually gripping, leading up to the stylized, shocking conclusion. As with so many of Welles's films, he was unhappy with the final result, but the viewer won't be. It would be most interesting to see the film as Welles intended it to be, but in the meantime, this version of The Stranger is a marvel of wonder
Just after the 2nd World War, Franz Kindler, (Orson Welles) takes up the position of schoolteacher in the small US back water town of Harper
Franz works hard to establish himself into the lives of the townsfolk and quickly becomes a respected member, and model of the community. But Franz Kindler is no ordinary small town citizen, but a man with a past and a false identity. He is an evil Nazi still believing in the supremacy of the Arian race who in the name of the Third Reich committed evil war crimes against the enemies of the Fatherland and atrocities against the Jews during the holocaust
The Federal agent and Nazi hunter played by Edward G Robinson has hounded the Nazi across America and pierced together Kindler's latest identity. The agent is closing the noose to bring the murderous and arrogant Nazi to justice. The tense atmosphere reaches fever pitch, as the hunter is just a footstep and breath away from his unsuspecting prey
An outstanding film with terrific performances and a brilliantly tense heart-pounding climax

- According to the biography of his co-star, Margaret Lockwood, much fun was had in the making of this film by the false nose Orson Welles used which seems to have stolen the picture! Adquate if uninspiring movie. Solid and at times stodgy. What the hell Welles was thinking appearing in such mediocre fare as this only a couple of years after The 3rd Man, is beyond me. Welles was 36 years old when the film was made. 3 stars out of 5
