In his late teens, Picasso
rebelled against the academic
style in art, quitting Madrid's
San Fernando Academy and
returning to Barcelona. He
found the stimulus he needed
in the city, at the Els Quatre
Gats (The Four Cats), a
consciously bohemian and
avant-garde tavern. Its
habitues were interested in all
the latest artistic trends in
Paris and London,
particularly the elegant,
undulating art nouveau style.
Picasso became one of the
stars of the establishment,
which was the setting for his
first exhibition of portraits
and caricatures (February
1901). His design for a menu
is influenced by art nouveau,
and also by the bold,
simplified compositions of
poster artists like Henri de
Toulouse-Lautrec and the
British Beggarstaff Brothers.
Appropriately, in 1900 Picasso
set off for London but only
got as far as Paris, where he
would experience an artistic
atmosphere infinitely headier
than anything Barcelona
could offer.
