The Devil in the Flesh Book (1923) ~ Texts II

I don't think there will ever be anybody who would explain to me how someone so young could write something so penetratingly mature. Yes Radiguet had read and absorbed the classics but you just cannot have written this stuff without first experiencing it.

I have never read a better book. It moved me like no other, made me sad at the cruelness that is only all too human ... I first read it in one sitting as I just could not put the book down.

Shakespeare could have learnt from Radiguet on how to use words economically; Dickens could have learnt how to convey human emotion.

A love story as delicate as anything written before or since.

A work of a genius all the more remarkable by the author's tender years.

The Devil in the Flesh Book (1923) ~ Texts III

The Devil in the Flesh, one of the finest, most delicate love stories ever written, is set in Paris during the last year of the First World War. The narrator, a boy of sixteen, tells of his love affair with Martha Lacombe, a young woman whose soldier husband is away at the Front. The liaison soon becomes a scandal and their friends, horrified and incredulous, refuse to accept what is happening - even when the affair reaches its tragic climax. In the film Le Diable au Corps (with Gerard Philipe and Micheline Presle), Claude Autant-Lara recreated this story of the First World War with nostalgic tenderness. His sensitive dramatization treats the affair with such delicacy that many critics consider the love scenes to be among the most beautiful ever photographed.

The film won the Grand Prix and the International Critics Prize.

The Devil in the Flesh Book (1923) ~ Texts IV

The Devil in the Flesh is the story of an adolescent boy in wartime. Most of the events take place in the northern suburbs of Paris. The boy slips away from home by night to visit a married woman, slightly older, whose husband is at the front. The love affair between the unnamed narrator and Marthe Lacombe runs from the first shy approaches to violent sensuality to an encompassing tenderness, with lovers' quarrels and the immature boy's cruelty depicted with intense effectiveness.

The directly expressed emotions in The Devil in the Flesh are totally effective, and they remain a miracle of adolescent writing.

The book has been superbly translated by Kay Boyle.
