Rosa Bonheur French animal painter widely acclaimed in
her lifetime. Her best pictures, often of horses,
combine vigorous action with accurate detail
and are frequently huge, one depicting 10 lifesize horses. For her most important work, Horse
Fair (1885) she disguised herself as a man to
obtain correct 'local colour'.
