(Romulus)
Based upon a second novel by John Braine,
the sombre, sometimes dreary but usually
honest drama picks up its narrative 10 years
later. The Mordecali Richler screenplay continues the story of the young, designing opportunist who rose to the top in social and
business standing, but at loss of his self-respect, as limned in Room. Now, however,
after having enjoyed the position he sought
for a decade, he is even more aware of the
necessity of clinging to his ideals and tries to
do something about a life he has found
empty.
Laurence Harvey continues in the mood of
his character in Room, now sales chief of his
millionaire father-in-law's woolen mills in a
sooty Yorkshire town. Jean Simmons as his
wife (replacing Heather Sears in original
role) has a rather unsympathetic character
which she nonetheless enacts persuasively.
