Alfred Carlton Gilbert’s life had been mapped out. The multi-talented son of an investment banker who already knew fame as an Olympic gold medallist, he was poised to take up a career in medicine and become the reliable son his father had always wanted – and was soon to be a father himself.
Yet, at heart, the idealistic Gilbert was an inventor. Creating the world-famous Erector set - a brilliantly simple toy allowing children to construct an infinite number of items - he went on to develop an astonishing array of educational kits, including science and magic sets and toy trains; by the time of his death in the early 1960s, he had 150 patents for a range of inventions.
The Man Who Saved Christmas shows how A.C. Gilbert, supported and encouraged by wife Mary and brother Frank, turned his dream into a reality, despite opposition from his father – and how, during the dark days of World War One, he made a decision that would help keep the joy of Christmas alive for millions of children.
Seinfeld star Jason Alexander heads an all-star cast as the extraordinary A.C. Gilbert in this heart-warming story directed by the Emmy-award winning Sturla Gunnarsson.
