Everything is sung - even the most
mundane dialogue - in director
Jacques Demy's enchanting French
throwback to the Hollywood musicals
of the late 1920s. The stunning design
(Cherbourg citizens allowed their
buildings to be painted pink and red)
and Catherine Deneuve's ethereal
performance add to the fairy-tale
qualities of the haunting love story
between a shop girl and a garage
attendant. It's when he leaves her
pregnant to fight in the Algerian War
that Demy's tuneful heartbreaker
reaches the dizzy romantic heights.
Michel Legrand's gorgeous score
includes the standard I Will Wait for
You and Watch What Happens.
Absolutely beguiling. Has there ever been a better musical? Definately not. This film is one of those rare movies that will stay with you forever. Not only will you find yourself humming the soundtrack to yourself for months afterwards, but the beautiful sets, costumes and casting with never cease to amaze.
In French with English subtitles.
