• 1988: British Representative at the 43rd Venice Biennale. Wins Turner Prize. Receives Professorship at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf

• 1992: Retrospective at the Tramway, Glasgow

• 1994: Elected RA

• 1996: Retrospective at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. Receives an Honorary Professorship in Budapest

• 2001: Wins the Shakespeare Prize. Receives a Professorship at the Hochschule der Künste (HdK), Berlin; an Honorary Degree Award of Doctor of the University of Surrey; an Honorary Fellowship from the John Moores University, Liverpool
