        Painter

      • (Adolphe) William Bouguereau was the most revered French academic painter of his day. His harmony of composition and technical skill, as displayed in his remale nudes, were superb but his subjects banal.

      • Adolphe William Bouguereau won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and spent four years in Italy. He painted 'Renaissance-type' nudes, rather cloying religious subjects, and portraits of photographic verisimilitude: this probaly explains why Renoir, on being fitted with new glasses to correct hus myopia, threw them on the floor, crying: 'Bon Dieu, je vois comme Bouguereau!'

There are works in Birmingham, Bordeaux, Dijon, La Rochelle, Paris (Mus. d'Orsay) and in many US museums, especially Williamstown Mass., where his nudes make an instructive comparison with those by Renoir in the same collection.
