Steven Spielberg
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence. Science-fiction fantasy drama. 2001. US. Colour. 139 minutes. 12.
Well I would venture that this is Jude Law's best performance on the big
screen as the guide-come-protector. He gives such a showy performance that it feels
the screen, almost pushing anyone else to the edges.
It is an ambitious film, a dark fable for the new millennium. And
the special effects are among there with the best you could ever find in a film.
Haley Joel Osment plays an android child,
programmed to love and allocated to a couple whose own critically-ill son has
been cryogenically frozen. When the real son recovers, robot boy has to fend for imself in the
most brutal of worlds. Osment pulls off the role perfectly.
It is a bleak work and at times a disturbing one. But it is well worth at least catching it once and, really, I cannot find a fault.
5 stars out of 5.
