Biography

Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. She began studying acting at age 11 at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York City. Her screen debut was as a child in Hal Ashby's comedy Lookin' to Get Out (filmed 1980; released 1982).

Abandoning early plans to become a funeral director, Jolie pursued modeling and appeared in music videos. She acted in five student films directed by her older brother, James Haven Voight, and honed her craft at the Met Theater in Los Angeles with Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, and Amy Madigan.

Jolie returned to feature films in Cyborg II: Glass Shadows (1993) and gained recognition in Hackers (1995), co-starring with Jonny Lee Miller. They married in 1996 and divorced in 1999. She continued in films such as Foxfire (1996), Love Is All There Is (1996), Without Evidence (1996), and Mojave Moon (1996).

Her career breakthrough came with HBO's Gia (1998), portraying model Gia Carangi, earning critical acclaim, Emmy nominations, and a Golden Globe Award.
