In the next six years, he began working for the English market, and around 1730 Joseph Smith, made British Consul in Venice in 1744, had some kind of agreement with Canaletto to have first choice on his paintings and was some kind of middle-man in other sales. From 1746 to around 1756, the painter was in England, a stay interspersed with visit(s) to Venice, and painted many London and English scenes.

Trivia:

• Canaletto's earliest signed and dated work is Architectual Capriccio (1723)
• Served apprenticeship with his father and his brother
• His most notable English scenes are Eton College and Warwick Castle
• Panini (c.1692-1765/8) was an early influence on his work
• Bernardo Bellotto, his nephew, was also a landscape painter. He was known to use his uncle's name
