Belinda Carlisle
Belinda helped form The Go-Go’s, one of the first all-female bands writing their own songs. Their debut album Beauty and the Beat came out in 1981, followed by Vacation (1982) and Talk Show (1985).
After the Go-Go’s initially split in 1986, Belinda launched her solo career. Her first solo album, Belinda (1986), performed well — its single “Mad About You” reached No. 3 in the U.S.
Her 1987 album Heaven on Earth marked her peak solo success. The title track became a worldwide No. 1 hit. Other notable tracks and albums followed: Runaway Horses (1989) and Live Your Life Be Free (1991). {index=4}
In 1993 she released Real, and in 1996 A Woman and a Man, but by that time her commercial momentum had slowed. After decades in the industry, her style had evolved, and public tastes shifted.
She spent many years living in Europe — a major period of personal change and introspection.
In 2007 she released Voila, a collection of French-language pop and chanson covers, reflecting her love of European music and her years living abroad.
A decade later, in 2017, she released Wilder Shores, a bold and personal album made up of Kundalini-yoga-inspired chants sung in Punjabi and English — a creative departure from her pop past.
In 2021, The Go-Go’s were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a milestone acknowledged with a performance at the ceremony.
Though the band attempted a 2022 tour, it was later cancelled; by 2023 Carlisle publicly stated that “the Go-Go’s are done,” citing a decision to end on a high note.
March 2023 marked Belinda’s return to English-language pop with the EP Kismet, featuring the lead single “Big Big Love”, written by hitmaker Diane Warren. It was her first English pop release in 27 years. {index=12}
In 2025 she announced a new full-length solo album, Once Upon a Time in California, scheduled for release on 29 August 2025.
Carlisle’s path has included significant personal challenges. She has been open about past struggles with substance dependency and body-image issues. In the early 2000s she entered a 12-step program and credited her later work — especially Voila — with helping her maintain sobriety and recovery.
She lived for many years in Europe and later relocated to Mexico City.
Belinda Carlisle remains active — writing new music, performing live, and embracing renewed creative energy. Her return with Kismet and the upcoming 2025 album shows a willingness to evolve rather than rely solely on past glories. In interviews she speaks frankly about recovery, reinvention, and what it means to age as a pop artist.
Whatever the future holds, Carlisle’s career stands as a notable example of reinvention — from 1980s rock/pop icon to introspective interpreter, to a mature artist reconnecting with her musical roots.
