Of all that has been said and written about the greatness of Buddy Holly, both as a composer and as a performer, the most outstanding testimony to his musical genius remains his lasting popularity on records. His very successful career, though tragically short, had a tremendous influence on popular music. And today, some eight years after the plane crash that snatched away his life so suddenly, this influence is felt even more than ever.
Since 1957, when THAT'LL BE THE DAY burst forth on the record scene, featuring Buddy Holly and the Crickets, the "Buddy Holly sound" has become an enduring inspiration to new talent on both sides of the Atlantic. Proving that his appearance on the best-seller charts was no accident, Buddy followed this smash hit with EVERYDAY, PEGGY SUE, LISTEN TO ME, MAYBE BABY and THINK IT OVER to name just a few.
Little did anyone then realize that the sound heard in that brief span of thirty months, Buddy's active recording and personal-appearance career, would be the forerunner of today's sound. As one critic so aptly put it, "The Buddy Holly sound of the fifties became the British sound of the sixties". This truism has been illustrated time and time again, in any number of interviews with any number of the popular groups of today, each of whom has given credit to the "Buddy Holly sound" for directing its interest and development in the new sound of popular music.
As said before, the best evidence of Buddy's lasting impact on today's music lies in his recordings, the greatest of which are included on this tape - the songs which have been mainly responsible for the Buddy Holly legend.
