Camille in Japanese Dress
Claude Monet was fascinated by theories about complementary colours and how they struck the eye: yellow set against purple, orange against blue, and red against vivid green.
He was also an early champion of plein-air (outdoor) painting, which freed artists from their workshops.
Through the 1870s, his paintings became softer, less studio bound and precise.
His brushwork was increasingly swift and feathery, as in his evocation of the wind brushed grass.
He painted in haste, before the breeze changed or light faded, often taking more than one canvas with him and leaving one to work on the next time as the clouds, light and sky changed.
Before Monet started painting, he primed his canvasses with a white base paint, which gave a rare luminosity to his work.
