CRAIGIE AITCHISON (Artist)
Craigie Aitchison was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 13 January 1926. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1952-54). Died 2009.
His one-man exhibitions over the years include in 1959 one at the Beaux Arts Gallery, Marlborough Fine Art (London) Ltd. (1968), Compass Gallery,
Glasgow (1970), Basil Jacobs Gallery, London (1971), the
Knoedler Gallery, London (1977) and Kettle's Yard, Cambridge (1979).
Retrospectives include one at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1981,
Harewood House, Leeds (1994), and at the
Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (1996).
Awards include the Edwin Austin Abbey Premier Scholarship
(1965), the Lorne Scholarship (1974-75),
Korn Ferry International Award, Royal Academy of Arts (1991),
the Jerwood Foundation Award
(1994) and the Nordstern Art Prize (2000).
Aitchison was elected Royal Academician in 1988
and was made CBE in 1999.
He lived and works in London.
