This is Bowie's latter masterpiece waiting to be found by the masses. It is truly dark, satanic in places and reminds me of Samuel Beckett old men wandering along desolute streets and countryside and frequenting rooms as per Prodigy's Breathe video. And the beats, the beats, they're hypnotic.
Reunited with Brian Eno as co-producer after all these years, it's up there with the Berlin trilogy. I cannot believe that so called music critics of the time (and even some today) dismissed it as, at best, of minor importance. For example, this is from page 9, Culture. Sunday Times, 17.01.16: "Where once he could paint, briefly and vividly, a stark picture of dystopia, by 1995, reunited with Eno, Bowie turned in a 75 minute concept album that even diehard fans relegate to the lower divisions." 2 stars out of 5. Utter tosh. Did these critics even listen to the album? You can't relegate it to 'lower divisions' - I think this album proves that there was no such thing as "Bowie's 1990s doldrums." This is a milestone in a long career; waiting for you to hear it, again and again, for as surely as day follows night, the album needs constant playing to really unlock the frenetic mystery of it all.
It really is the forerunner to Blackstar, a kind of exclamation mark to the latter's full stop.
Lordy, it's so good, a book has been written about it (David Bowie in Darkness: A Study of 1. Outside and the Late Career (direct link to book @ amazon.co.uk)) Strangers When We Meet, the first single from the album, is just a catchy, beautiful song. Thereafter, you're on a ride though Hell with William Blake at the wheel.
Play it loud until it's rattling around your head, pounding your senses like a fist inside your head.
There have been a few different releases of this including Version 2. Just check ebay.co.uk to see the variety of releases (direct link to 1. Outside).
